Pearwillow / RANK

tumblr_pelod6tOrq1tv56zio7_75sq.png The first things that dragons note about Pearwillow is how softspoken she is. Shy and reticent, Pearwillow is mostly seen around her clinic, where she heals Beasts - both unbonded and familiars - and dragons alike, only really spending time with her spunky familiar, a Boneshard Jeweller, and Tide, her best friend and mate for life. She also enjoys spending time with Cottonwood, her cousin, in the Sunroom, where he paints and she knits. They are quite likeminded, and have been close ever since she forgave him for unknowingly abandoning her.

Despite her soft demeanour, Pearwillow struggles with some trauma surrounding how she was treated while working for her own family, as well as around the death of her parents and the shocking circumstances leading to her becoming a maid for Cottonwood's step family. Despite this, she often has a soft smile on her face, especially when surrounded by her medical tools and books.

In her spare time, Pearwillow reads her textbooks as well as fantasy books, where she can escape into her imagination while curled up next to Tide. Her pairing with Tide came as little of a surprise to those who knew either individual, as Apis, Tide's best friend knew his friend to colour up and go silent when Pearwillow spoke to him, and so was ecstatic when the two paired off. Nowadays, the two spend their time reading together and walking alongside the beach in silence, stealing looks at each other and blushing when the other catches them.

Pearwillow had been aware when the strange dragon entered the castle. Shutting the summer heat out of the cold castle, he had strode inside, accompanied by a young Chillriver Bucktooth that seemed to take orders from him and chatter to itself. His wings were tucked away, and he was dressed in insect shell armor (chitin) on which was draped black fabrics. He was in mourning. From her upstairs vantage point, she stifled a gasp as she realised that this must be the prodigal, seemingly illegitimate, son that the Queen had insisted come to abdicate his throne. Quickly spotting her hidden amongst the drapes, he raised a large paw and waved. She skittered down the stairs adjacent to her and came to a halt in front of him.

'Hello.' His voice was not deep, but seemed to carry a weariness beyond his age. 'Could you tell me where I could find the Queen?'

She smiled kindly. 'Of course! However she and her sons have gone to bury the King, your father.' He bowed his head at that. 'They'll be back soon though. Why don't I show you to a room? You'll be more comfortable there.'

'That sounds wonderful. I'm-'

'Cottonwood, I know.' His eyebrows lifted. 'I'm the niece of your stepmother.' she said, colouring slightly. I've grown up here since my own parents perished.

He accepted that and nodded. 'And you are?'

'Pearwillow!' She grinned, then it dimmed slightly, remembering the grim occasion he had come here for.

'Well it's nice to make your acquaintance Pearwillow.' He held out a large paw, which she took. His grasp was firm.

They began walking in comfortable silence towards the chambers that Cottonwood would be less familiar with, but she was unsure where else to invite him to stay, considering that his one good connection to the family was dead. The silence was broken by Cottonwood, who had clearly been worrying over something.

He sighed. 'I don't belong here.'

She furrowed her eyebrows. 'None of us do. I'm not even related to the family, not really. I'm not in line for the throne, which is all that seems to matter. But regardless. We 'belong' anyway. Because if not, we wouldn't be able to sleep at night.'

"I learned it early"

"Okay, and you learned it wrong." Frustrated, Pearwillow's tail tapped a rhythm on the ground, agitated. She wasn't even sure how she had entered into an argument with the stubborn Tide, only that she had never meant to do so. She liked him enough, well, not liked him like that more like - she stopped that train of thought, her face scales heating up.

He hunched back over. "We don't have to have this conversation." he muttered, sounding defeated, inexplicably.

"No its. It's ok. Come on Tide, let's just do something else."

Pearwillow had awoken with a reverberating sense of unease, and to her surprise, she could hear some sort of yowling coming from the den next to hers.

She shut the door to her marble healer's den quietly, hoping not to disturb whatever had woken her. However, they stopped at her noise.

As her footfalls approached she heard a whispered curse and an attempt to scramble away, before the same dragon cursed again and seemed to fall with a loud thud.

"Who's there?" She said, surprised to see the noise was coming from Apis's tent.

"Pearwillow!" He gasped.

She rushed in and was aghast to see Tide throttling the life out of Apis. She dragged them apart.

"What are you doing, Apis!"

He coloured. "I was just giving him the treatment he gave me." He spat on the ground.

"You were going to kill him?"

Tide bared his teeth, eyes crackling. "He killed me first."
