Eyes so clear the frozen mountain rivers melted could not compare. So bright and beautiful. They hold all the innocence of this dark world this cold unforgiving world. Even the shadows will engulf her pure light to protect her from the treachery she has endured.

Pure as Snow innocent and never tainted. Hidden away from the darkness, death, treachery, dark desires, hate, pain… hide her away they say. Keep her safe they say. How long till greed desires the untainted? How long can the shadows protect her?


It was cold that night in the abandoned castle the hearth having died with no wood to feed the hungry flames. The cold stone floors and frozen windows the cold breeze that blows through the cracks of the walls. It doesn’t bother her per say but her guardian seems to be frozen cold. There’s no much she can do at this point. She’s only a hatchling.

“Your purest, I- I think -it’s-its time for- for bed,” her guardian stammered frozen cold. His beard was frosted and his fins were fragile with the froze air. He was meant for water not ice and snow.

“I’m sorry Eldest… I suppose the cold bothers you,” Snow said softly fiddling with her locket.

“Your purest… it’s- it’s fine,” the guardian tried to reassure her. She was not reassured. He walked her through the cold dark halls to the south wing.

“Your purest,” the guardian said bowing before closing the south wings doors not daring step into the darkest corner of the castle. Snow turned and walked down the hall the wall scones dormant, the cracks in the floor spiderwebbing across it, old tattered flags hung from the walls, old spruce doors hung from their hinges the said hinges rusted to dust.

“It’s late Snow,” a voice said softly as black feathers appeared from the darkest shadows of the hall.

“Does the cold bother you like Alkor?” Snow asked as Blank emerged from the shadows and materialized.

“The guardian? As a… how to put this for such a young one as you? We are different Snow. Alkor is… similar to most other dragons, he is not used to the cold like you and I. It’s all we have ever known,” Blank said kneeling before Snow. Darkers shadowy wisps curled around Snow gently before returning to her lamp at Blanks hip.

“Why am I different? Why must we hide?” Snow asked quietly looking up at Blank.

“You are special. As to why we must hide. Those of us who are special are seen as outsiders… alien to the native, or seen as a source of power,” Blank said sadly. He picked Snow up and carried her to her room at the end of the hall in the tower far above the castles tallest roof.

“Get some sleep Snow,” Blank said tucking her in before disappearing to his study a floor below hers.

Crimson blood tainted the snow… the clear blue sky mocked them mocked her…
