SUBJECT OVERVIEW
[SECTION PENDING APPROVAL]

PRIMARY INCIDENT LOG
1 female Consciousness and a swarm of 12 Banescale drones (presumably under command of Consciousness) were observed migrating from RS.154 to EW.3572.1786 on 05.12.2022. Operation to neutralize all threats in the area launched immediately, local emergency response team deployed. 10 of original 12 drone targets and 1/1 Consciousness were neutralized in operation. Lost contact with emergency response team, presumed deceased. Remains of neutralized targets were reclaimed for examination 21 hours following failed operation, remains of deceased emergency response team also recovered and confirmed deceased at this time. Two surviving drones [Threat 1, Threat 2 - File Subject] discovered to have relocated to MP.3850.1650 26 hours following failed operation. Observations indicate Threats 1 and 2 do not display further intent to travel, confirming anticipated behavior.

Due to the unlikely nature of drones' survival in absence of a Consciousness, remaining Threats 1 and 2 have not been redesignated as targets and are expected to expire within six days. No emergency response team has been dispatched to neutralize Threats 1 and 2. Local dragon clans have been advised to remain distant from the drones' active location, and diplomatic authorities have been dispatched to oversee civilian clan security in the surrounding area.

THREAT REPORT UPDATE 1: DAY 8. Threat 1 has expired, observations indicate starvation consistent with neglected drones without consciousness supervision. Threat 2 [FILE SUBJECT] continues to occupy consistent territory and despite outliving expectations, appears to be succumbing to starvation over time. New anticipated expiration: 48 hours.

THREAT REPORT UPDATE 2: DAY 9. File Subject continues to deteriorate but has begun to exhibit unusual behavior. Despite reduced stability and increased difficulty in mobility, File Subject appears to be attempting to leave the secured territory. It has also begun vocalizing in an unusual manner. Anticipated expiration: 18 hours. [UNCHANGED]

THREAT REPORT UPDATE 3: DAY 10. File Subject has stopped deteriorating and has now escaped contained territory. Threat observed to be in pursuit of friendly. Request to redesignate as a prime target pending. Reassessment of threat's caste pending. Anticipated expiration: UNKNOWN.

THREAT REPORT UPDATE 4: DAY 10. File Subject redesignated as Primary Target and assigned code MP_0001 with full code #617252-0001. File Subject's caste has been reassessed and confirmed as Backup Consciousness. Local forces dispatched to pursue & eliminate target. Status of friendly unknown.

THREAT REPORT UPDATE 5: DAY 10. Emergency response squad terminated within 120 seconds of arrival to target location. File Subject location unknown following operation failure. Additional search party dispatched immediately, target has not yet been located.

THREAT REPORT UPDATE 6: DAY 12. File Subject has not yet been located. Reacquisition of target location is anticipated, search is ongoing. Hypnodrone identified over FT.2809.2285 suspected to be in area, lead assigned scientists suggest it may be responding to signals emitted by File Subject. Hijacker on standby.

THREAT REPORT UPDATE 7: DAY 16. File Subject has been located along with MP_0003. No visual on File Subject has been made, but MP_0003 has been observed patrolling the area. Subject theorized to be metamorphosing and is protected. Hijacker preparing for deployment.

HIVEMIND FILE
Nobody’s entirely sure what it is or where it came from. Theories vary, but most tales generally hold that the hivemind is old, very old - perhaps even older than dragonkind itself. It is a deadly, soul-sucking phenomenon that can steal away the very minds and bodies of dragons, reducing them into nothing more than drones, who work only to further the plans of their consciousness.

It behaves almost like a hive of insects. Most individuals are drones; dragonlike creatures with black chitin in place of scales, who move as though possessed. Drones are not sentient, they are not sapient, and they can barely be considered alive. They are disposable workers, who serve under the control of a rogue consciousness that treats them less like living beings and more like extensions of its own body. A consciousness is the brain, and its drones are the muscle, the sinew, the churning innards.

The presence of a consciousness is critical in supporting a hive. Drones are hollow-minded beings without any autonomy or individuality, and most are not programmed with a survival failsafe to remind them to eat and drink if the consciousness commanding them is disconnected. Though they come in many different shapes and sizes depending on what they were in their previous life, drones are rarely prone to doing anything other than what they are told, and those who break the mold are often considered defective and subsequently terminated.

Consciousnesses are sentient in the most alien of senses - they can use logic and reason, but think more like computers than flesh-and-blood beings, seeking only to survive and thrive in the most efficient way possible. They tend to work alone. They are capable of communicating to their drones and to other consciousnesses along wavelengths, psychic signals similar to radio signals that permeate the globe.

The threat of hives comes from the way they grow. Though drones can create more of themselves naturally by laying eggs, this process takes time, and is only advantageous for its production of pureborn drones. Instead, a much quicker process is that of assimilation. In assimilation, a dragon is forcefully transformed into a drone via a concoction called assimilation fluid that only the hive has been known to produce. Assimilation completely strips a dragon of their appearance, autonomy, and memories, leaving them an unrecognizable husk.

Hives do not care for the wellbeing of dragonkind, and view it as a race of farm animals at best. To them, dragons are only a means to an end, more fodder for their ever-growing forms. They steal dragons away from their homes to be assimilated or worse, they exploit everything they come across for the sake of their own benefit, and they destroy any who would pose a threat to them. The hivemind is clever, and it will not stop unless it is beaten back with force. If left unchallenged, it will swallow the whole of Sorneith.

Do not let it win. Do not give in. Do not assimilate.

CASTE FILE: BACKUP CONSCIOUSNESS
Consciousnesses are the brains of hives, and tend to work alone. Consciousnesses can be created in a variety of ways. Some consciousnesses are created through hatching eggs, for just as eggs can be modified to change a drone’s physique, they can also be modified to produce a consciousness. Most consciousnesses produced this way emerge first as backups, and only metamorphose into a full consciousness once the previous consciousness has been terminated. Consciousnesses can also be created through assimilation, though this is very rare and unstable.

The more common method of creating a consciousness is through backup code. If a consciousness fears that it might be killed, it can insert some mental code into a drone of its choice that acts as a contingency. The drone, now referred to as a backup, will continue to look and behave like a drone until the circumstances of the contingency - usually the previous consciousness’s death - are met. After this, it will follow a series of pre-programmed instructions.

The instructions typically tell it to find a suitable hiding place and to begin the process of becoming a consciousness, wherein it freezes and metamorphoses into a consciousness, becoming physically larger and undergoing a massive restructuring of its brain. Once the metamorphosis is complete, it sheds its previous carapace and emerges a new consciousness. Many consciousnesses, upon entering near-death, will send a massive burst of information to the backup detailing their memories, personality, and goals, such that the backup might learn from them.
