SlapBracelet wasn’t really well known for being subtle - after all, his wings were great flags of dazzling neon blue - but when it came to things that really mattered to him, matters close to his heart, he liked to think he was quite good at remaining inconspicuous enough to play his emotions off as if they were nothing.

The key phrase to note here is ‘would like to think’.

Anyone with an eye or a brain cell could see immediately that he was out-over-wings for BlueCandyCane, the resident owner of the bowling alley just next to the Laser Tag business SlapBracelet ran himself.

BlueCandyCane was the only one who could throw him off his game. SlapBracelet never missed a shot, had perfect aim, could shoot players round corners and backwards and every-which-way, except that one-time BlueCandyCane shouted a passing ‘hi’ his way. That was the one and only time SlapBracelet had been defeated at his own game, and it wasn’t something anyone would ever find out about - except of course the all but infamous dragon who’d managed to score the winning shot. SlapBracelet had offered them 5 free rounds to never speak of it again.

His feelings were seen in the many times he walked past the bowling alley, feigning interest in the latest deals, the flashing lights, the new playlist etc, when really he was looking for BlueCandyCane, just to talk to him, about anything really - even a quick barter of insults would suffice, then he could leave satisfied that his day had improved a little bit, with a beaming, sharp-toothed grin etched across his face.

All of these actions were noticeable to outsiders, every shy grin, every lingering stare, every purposeless meander across to the alley. It was all so strikingly clear to pretty much everyone who paid the slightest heed to his antics.

Everyone, except BlueCandyCane.

BlueCandyCane, who walked past the laser tag studio at least two dozen times a day.

BlueCandyCane, who rushed to the front desk of the bowling alley as soon as he caught sight of something even remotely blue.

BlueCandyCane, who was every bit as hopelessly head over heels for SlapBracelet, as SlapBracelet was for him.
