HEAVENGATE

Lukas has been many people throughout his life.

He began in an orphanage, a holy place stuffed to the brim with other hatchlings. There he learned of Rigel's teachings, that one should not be ashamed of tears and that the cries of babies are truly prayers to the gods. He was grateful to have loving caretakers who taught him all the best games and were always willing to offer a hug, even when the food hoard ran low.

And as he grew, Lukas' home remained crowded, filled with blubbered prayers day and night. His caretakers, doting as they were, could not spare as much time for a hatchling as old as Lukas. So he learned to be self-reliant; more and more often he would stay out late with the other older hatchlings who were too old to be adopted. He found his niche in card games, reading people's expressions so he always folded or raised at the right time. And then he learned how to slip an ace up his sleeve and play it for the perfect hand, and he developed his signature charming demeanor which could outwit any opponent with a well-timed wink. After the discovery of his sorcery, which allows him to store any number of things in a private extradimensional space, Lukas was unstoppable at the poker table; he always had the right card. His affable exterior could fool nearly anyone, but nearly was the problem. He knew swindling people would disappoint Rigel just as it disappointed himself. But a dragon has to eat.

With enough treasure put away, Lukas was able to purchase himself better attire and modest accommodations. Now a young teen, he longed for a true career, something upstanding and respectable. And so he became a ropemaker's apprentice. No, ropemaking wasn't some fancy banker's job, but Lukas was proud at the time. It afforded him a measure of comfort and his master even taught him to read and write and count. Reading opened his eyes to the greater prospects of the world, though. And so Lukas decided to begin anew once again.

This time, Lukas' new identity would be alchemist. He would mix reagents and potions and create all sorts of fascinating brews! Except the stench of the cauldron always burned his nostrils and tore at his throat. Perhaps this wasn't for him either...

And so Lukas took his knowledge of people, ropes, and books (and even his stinking acids) off to new shores. He felt a call for something greater, to explore the world and see who else he could become. Armored for adventure, he quickly met hundreds of new dragons who shared in his wanderlust. And eventually he found his answer.

One day in a town he was passing through, Lukas heard the town crier advertising an audition opportunity. Tired of a life of acting, Lukas at first ignored this declaration. But then his ears perked up at the mention of the Verdant Vanguard, an elite team of adventurers who mapped the uncharted and fought the wicked. They were looking for a new member, someone with magic and a desire to help people. And so he auditioned. And to his surprise, was quickly accepted...

It was easy to fall in love with her; the Empyreal Archdruid, leader of the Verdant Vanguard, was becoming a legend among dragons. Her care for the innocent reminded Lukas of home, and her wild demeanor was refreshing, entirely unlike the calculating nature of poker. And she found comfort in him, someone who could speak so confidently yet was so in touch with his emotions. She needed that, someone was not ashamed to be vulnerable. She'd hid her inner turmoil over the loss of her family for years from her fellow adventurers, always expecting that as the leader she had to appear strong at all time. And together they gave each other the outlets to truly be free.

And so Lukas changed once again, from adventurer into husband and then into father. After many years of fighting on the frontlines, he settled it was time to retire. He now spends his days relaxing in the sun as his little ones play around him. And he is pleased he could offer so many other orphans a chance to explore life. He knows there are many twists and turns in store for them, but for now he enjoys their blissful laughs and joyous playing.
