He sits silent in the garden, so motionless he seems almost a statue. His neck is arched, his wings mantled; before him he casts a long shadow. The sun overhead seems too bright, for all the dark spilling at his feet. In that biting, baking heat, the Matriarch comes to him. Light and smoke from her drifting candles follow in her wake. Upon him and his stillness she gazes, and then to the earth. She stares at it for a long while. She says, "It will not grow." Slowly, he lifts his head to her. He does not peer at her, for his eyes are covered. He says nothing. The shadows of his wings fall upon turned earth. The dried flowers in his feathers smell overpowering in the dessicated air. Dead things, those flowers. Anything that grows here, surely, will become thus. What he has planted, will die. "It will not grow," she speaks again. "You know that, don't you? This ground is cursed. It will bear no fruit." He blinks calmly, though she cannot see it. The shadows of his wings flutter with his feathers. He says, "That remains to be seen." She watches him, silently assessing. She watches him for a long time, and he does not falter. Eventually she nods. "It is why you came here, I suppose," she allows, and stares at the little garden where nothing can grow. "I will not stop you." He does not reply. He stays where he is, as though his shadow alone might coax life into the poisoned soil. Eventually, she leaves him. He remains in the little wasteland that stole his heart, and vows that there shall one day be a harvest. (Writing by Spontaneite#328811) |
