Yushi Huang is perhaps the most reclusive member of the Heavenly Court, spending all of her time deep within the mountains of Yushi with only her black ox as company. Despite her solitary nature, she is a caring and compassionate god, who is willing to help others and does not hold grudges against those who had harmed her in the past. She is not a push-over, however, and has no problem providing assistance even when it goes against those who are in authority.

During her mortal life about 800 years ago, Yushi Huang was born the daughter of the King of Yushi and his lowest-rank concubine. As a result, she was overlooked by her father and her siblings and spent most of her time in mediation and service to the gods.

When she was a young adult, the kingdom of Xuli invaded, led by General Pei Ming. They quickly surrounded the palace where Yushi Huang and the rest of the royal family had taken refuge. Pei Ming brought a group of civilians to the palace gates, and told the king that he would release them and leave the kingdom if the king would come out of the palace, kowtow three times, and then kill himself as atonement for "oppressing the people." If he refused, Pei Ming would execute a group of civilians every day for three days, and then enter the palace to kill the royal family and remaining civilians.

Yushi Huang convinced her father to pass the throne to her. Now the King of Yushi, the next day she came before Pei Ming, kowtowed three times, and slit her throat using the sacred sword of Yushi, Yulong. Since Yushi Huang adhered to the letter of their agreement, Pei Ming had no choice but to withdraw from Yushi. As she breathed her last, Yushi Huang ascended to the Heavens and became the Rain Master. This story has become one of the Four Famous Tales.
