Lin Mingyue hatched on a clear night, when the full moon hung above the sky brightly. She came out a few seconds after her brother. Perhaps this was destiny, already foretold from the moment of her birth. Like a cosmic joke, even. Whatever the case, Lin Mingyue grew up with her brother in the small town of Zhongshan Diezhi (中山叠帜), or Zhongdie for short. She and her brother were bright children, running around and helping their mother out with her restaurant. Zhongdie was protected by a large sect, who treated their town comparably nicer than other large sects would by not demanding exorbitant amounts of money. So, other than some low levelled monsters, they were free of harm. And then two things happened. One, debt collectors came by for their deadbeat father’s debt. Nevermind the fact that he abandoned them, no; he was dead, and his family had to pay for it. Two, a cultivator came by, and offered a deal: she would pay off their large debt for them, in return for them becoming her disciples. Her first disciples. Lin Mingye and Lin Mingyue loved their freedom in town. They loved their mother more. So they went with the cultivator, who introduced herself as Nü Liu’an, granddaughter of Nü Yan’er, who was the founder of the sect they would be studying under. The sect they would be calling home, now. _________________________ |
Nü Liu’an wasn’t a kind Shizun. She was strict, expected them to be better than they actually were, and went through things with brutal efficiency. It worked, and it made it easier for Lin Mingye and Lin Mingyue to not have much of an attachment towards her. Years passed. Xingkong Sect slowly grew, picking off potential disciples from the streets. Throughout it all, Lin Mingye and Lin Mingyue gradually became stronger, reaching the Nascent Soul stage one after the other. They were two of the oldest disciples on the mountain; naturally, they’d be popular with the younger, weaker disciples too. If their younger martial siblings wanted someone to guide warmly, they would go to Lin Mingye; if they wanted someone willing to control them into success, they would find Lin Mingyue. Nobody ever knew that their names were their formal ones; they hadn’t been given courtesy names from their Shizun, and they were perfectly fine with the names they had now. It was their little secret. One of the many that they shared; as disciples of the Quickslash Nü Liu’an, as core disciples of Xingkong Sect, as the bright and happy kids of Zhongshan Diezhi they used to be. They had each other, and that would be enough. ____________________________________ |
