Originally from the Fishspine Reef, Mordecai grew up among sunken ruins and dark watery depths. He was nearly inseparable from his best friend, a coatl named Saul, and the two of them became like brothers. While Saul developed a knack for medicine, Mordecai showed interest in a variety of sciences and discovered his own aptitude for mechanical engineering. As he grew older he grew restless and soon he dreamed of seeing and learning of the world beyond the boundaries of the water flight's territory. Despite Saul's insisting that he stay, Mordecai left his home and ventured into the dangerous Wandering Contagion. It was there that he met a small band of plague dragons, the Clan of the Calamity, who upon seeing that he was far too weak to survive on his own in plague territory, decided to accept him as one of their own. He and the leader, Oddity, quickly bonded over the fact that they were both Fae dragons and that they both wished to learn the secrets of the plague flight's domain. Not long after Mordecai joined the Clan of the Calamity, a terrible pestilence called Creeping Decay struck. He was an engineer, not a doctor, but using what knowledge he had and what knowledge Saul had taught him, he set to work trying to discover a cure. After weeks of experimentation, all he had to show for his work was the rising death toll and the first signs of the Decay on himself. Growing more desperate and panicked by the day, he and Oddity made the decision to take the few remaining dragons into lightning territory, hoping that the scientists of the flight could help with a cure. Fortunately, a cure was found. Unfortunately, the clan realized they could never return home, for they had shown cowardice and weakness in the face of disease. Now Mordecai calls the Carrion Canyon home, living with the rest of his clan in an abandoned war bunker. He spends nearly all of his time in his underground laboratory and library. There he uses the secrets of the lightning flight's electricity to conduct many strange experiments and invent many strange contraptions. It was while inventing one of these contraptions that he miscalculated the heat and water amount of a steam engine and sustained some terrible burns on his face from an explosion. Bandages now cover his face, hiding scars left from both the Decay and the steam engine incident. Being the Head Scientist of a lightning clan carries a good deal of status, making him second in command to Oddity. |
