He was left to fend for himself, alone, with one word echoing in his mind: Failure. He wandered the Scarred Wasteland aimlessly, learning where to find food and shelter and how to defend himself, but he couldn't help longing for something more.

He found it when, while seeking shelter from a storm, he found himself sharing a cave with a tundra. The tundra’s many green eyes watched him warily, but there was no confrontation. The two eventually got to talking, and it turned out the tundra, Voir, had been alone all his life too. They agreed that they’d be better off sticking together--and the guardian's instinct told him to protect Voir.

Voir asked for the guardian’s name, and all he could say in response was the one thing he’d been called: Failure. Voir reluctantly accepted this. As time passed, and Voir and Failure grew closer, he came to shorten it to an affectionate nickname: Fai. Said it reminded him of a phrase--"semper fi." Always loyal.

Young dragons who had been separated from their families, be it by death, abandonment, or just straying too far and getting lost, seemed to keep finding the lair Fai and Voir called home. And Fai realized his charge: those alone and defenseless, like he had once been.

He was no longer a failure. He was brave, steadfast, loyal Fai, defender of the defenseless.
