Biography

"I cannot change the past, my lady,
but I will promise you my future."

Mate to Nola

xxxxThe days following Nola's breakdown had been a blur. When the clan had asked questions, he had supplied answers, blaming it all on the now missing mirror that had served as progenitor alongside their tiny matriarch. He knew of course, or rather, had a very strong inkling that it hadn't been the brash, violence-prone mirror at all, but his much quieter mate, Nola herself.
xxxxThat line of thinking was impossibly dangerous though. What hope was there for a fledgling clan led by an egg killer? Whispers circulated like wildfire among those early members, and it was all Pedran could manage to bind their ragtag group together with dramatizations of a cruel patriarch and the need to rally against such threats in the future. Nola, in her overwhelming guilt, was not much help, but at least she wasn't contradicting the tales Pedran spun to protect her.
xxxxThe two had taken to curling up together in the branches of a tree edging the clearing the majority of the clan resided in. It was there that Pedran found her now, curled in on herself, silently watching the clan's daily proceedings from a distance. "Nola?" Calling her name was similar to throwing out a line for fish, and he prayed she would bite this time around.
xxxxHer eyes, bright and all-seeing from her concealed position, didn't leave the clan as she replied, as if from some far off world, "I'm here."
xxxx"How are you today?"
xxxxShe ignored this question, instead opting for something that had been bothering her since her reunion with the clan following the reveal of her smashed nest. "They don't trust me." Her eyes turned to Pedran now, and the coldness there worked a chill into his chest. "They don't believe you."
xxxx"The clan believes in your guidance," he lied tentatively, trying to guage how effective it was. Not very, he thought, not much escaped Nola's eyes. "The gossip will settle down. It was shocking, but these times will pass..."
xxxx"I don't trust them either"
xxxxHe seized up, the seriousness of that statement catching him.
xxxx"I will leave this place," she mused, almost to herself. "This clearing and all these dragons who cannot follow a murderer-queen."
xxxx"I will follow," he breathed out, throat so tight the words barely left him. Pedran took a shaky breath and spoke again, louder, "I will follow you to the ends of Sornieth."
xxxxHer gaze seemed to reevaluate him on the spot, and it might have been his imagination, or maybe he was just too desperate to see the excited young fae that had enchanted him into joining her clan, but he could have sworn her expression softened, just the slightest bit. "If that is what you wish, it would please me."
xxxx"There are others," he replied in earnest, wanting to please her, wanting to see her soften a little more. "I am not the only one who still trusts in your ideals. Our numbers might be few but... We can rebuild. Start fresh."
xxxxShe let out a soft hum at this, contemplating the idea of beginning again. She would start a clan that knew no patriarch, that named only one progenitor. As the sun crept past its peak and slipped quietly beyond the distant plains of Earth territory, Nola dared to dream again.

xxxxShe tugged at the silk draped around his shoulders, tugging him closer and twisting her tail to catch on his. The mere closeness of her made him dizzy with need and love, even now, after all they'd been through relocating to the Shrieking Wilds with a handful of dragons from their original group and a couple new recruits. One other fae, a pearlcatcher, a skydancer, a coatl. Two imperials gone to ice with a vague promise to return one day. Two wildclaws who'd found them at the border of the Wilds and dedicated themselves to guiding the small party and fighting off the less peaceful denizens of the thick jungle. The female wildclaw especially seemed taken with something she sensed in Nola upon thier meeting, and had within a moon, sworn herself completely to the matriarch fae.
xxxxPedran focused on the present, at the tug and slide of the fine material on the back of his neck as Nola's claws dug into the folds, claws poking tiny points through the silk unintentionally. He flared his crests, moving his tail to twine with hers in response as he inched closer, captivated by her sudden boldness.
xxxxWhen they were close enough that their breath intermingled, space an arbitrary thing that had no business between them, Nola finally grew hesitant, nerves evident in the backward tilt of her crests. "Pedran..."
xxxx"My lady," he responded, not wanting the moment to be broken quite yet.
xxxx"You have done much for me, for the clan, though you claim little to no credit for yourself, swearing that it is I who directed you the whole way..."
xxxx"This move was your idea."
xxxxHer features twisted, only for a second, before she let out a sigh and smoothed her features back into a practiced mask of calm. "I cannot thank you enough, nor is it right of me to ask for anything more-
xxxx"Anything," he interupted, "If there is ever anything I could do for you I would do it in a heartbeat. You know this."
xxxxThe mask stayed firmly in place, but she made no move to back away. "You know the truth of what became of my mate and clutch." Pedran listened in silence, not sure what could follow what was the only admission of what had happened that Nola had, or ever would, make. "You know I am not suited to be a mate to any dragon and yet," she paused, eyes unreadable, "I would ask if you would ever consider... Taking suck a risk... As calling youself mine, and I yours."
xxxxPedran drew breath so sharply it was a hiss, unable to belive what Nola was proposing. "You would have me? I am no chosen dragon."
xxxx"I do not think I need another chosen dragon," she muttered, so low he could barely hear her.
xxxxHe tapped their foreheads together, resting there with closed eyes as he replied, "I can think of no greater honor, my lady." His wings wrapped around her much as they had once before, creating a cocoon with them inside, and all the rest of the world without. In the denim-tinged gloom he could just make out her eyes, a mixture of relief and fear swimming there, betraying Nola only when she was sure she wouldn't be seen by others. He let her stay there until she was composed again, the daydream of a dozen future clutches together leaving them both a little giddy when they finally separated.
