The moonlight brought with it a gentle rain that fell softly over the town of Arrowstone. It was one of the rain spells that promised a deep slumber, a lullaby to the townsfolk that would keep them asleep until the downpour subsided. Still, the beasts of the old hunting manor watched over the town, their cursed magic immune to such spells of the rain. Caviar’s crimson eyes narrowed as he peered through an old window, watching rivulets of water stream across the glass. The river outside surged with the rainfall and its dark water pooled over the banks. It promised a flood and it flooded out the things buried deep in the Earth. The last scraps of Godmother’s magic that still tainted the land hid beneath the dirt and it was times like these that it emerged, its dark tendrils reaching forth like undulating worms. They sought new hosts and Caviar had taken it upon himself to protect the town from the corruption. He often sacrificed himself as a vessel for it and tonight was no different. With a low growl he freed himself from the nest of crimson silk, uncoiling from around the four eggs that he guarded. Perhaps on another night, Tobiko would have protected their nest, but she too had fallen into the slumber that plagued Arrowstone. Caviar would return with the corruption burrowed deep into his own body. It was all he could do to protect Arrowstone, yet it took its toll. The magic fueled his own curse, making it more and more difficult to control. . . and this time, he had failed in subduing all of the dark magic. Some of the tendrils still erupted from his own skin and he wove a path of blackened earth beneath his claws as he wandered back to the manor. As he curled back within the nest, the corruption continued to spread, to Tobiko as well as the four eggs they guarded. The magic burrowed deep into the beasts and as the four children emerged, they too became spreaders of its corruption. Where they stepped, the earth beneath them desiccated, leaving behind parched grasses and dried herbs.
