PAST

Okiku’s mother hadn’t wanted hatchlings. Maybe it was the dismissive look her mother always gave her and her sister, or maybe it was that she would forget to feed them that clued her in to that fact. Living in a place like the Scarred Wasteland on top of that was just the realm’s way of telling them they weren’t meant to survive to adulthood. But Okiku was nothing if not stubborn and spiteful, so she struggled everyday just to prove it wrong. She didn’t really love her sister, but still she always made sure she had the majority of whatever food their mother gave them. Okiku still thinks it was the innocence in her sister’s eyes and her blindness to the hate their mother had for them that made her try to protect the little fool.

Okiku was unnaturally smart as a hatchling, especially when compared to her sister, which made her strange in her mother’s eyes. Her mother didn’t like strange things because her father had been strange and new, there one minute and gone the next. To add even more insult to the injury, Okiku was born with eyes that neither of her parents had, while her sister’s were perfectly common. One didn’t have to think hard to guess which hatchling she disliked most.

Perhaps Okiku's continued existence became too much for her mother to bear one day, and their mother dragged them to a strange pool of black sludge. The smell was horrific, like all the death and decay and despair of the world was contained in its depths. Okiku remembered alternating between eyeing the pool with disgust and glaring at her mother’s back with wariness. Her foolish little sister was content with twirling around the mother and looking back at her with mirthful eyes, as if their mother didn’t ooze ominous intent. She remembered clearly the coldness in her mother’s eyes when she told Okiku that she was only willing to put up with one nuisance from that day foward. The last thing she remembered of that day was her sister’s growls of confusion and terror as her mother tossed Okiku in the pool of rot, picked up her sister and left her to die.

She doesn’t remember a lot of what happened after, but she will never forget how the sticky wrongness of the sludge clung to her and dragged her down as she struggled to breath. Okiku woke up on the edges of the Starfall Isles with her white hair stained coal and parts of her body stained that same, deathly black of the pool. She woke with a strange emptiness in the heart she didn’t know she had and felt like the bitterness of the sludge was absorbed into her very soul.
