Coelageist was born deep in the Undersea, in a nest built around a hydrothermal vent. She does not share when or why she was banished to the surface, or anything at all about her life Beneath. All that is known is one day she dragged her aching body out of the ocean onto the rocky beach of the Valley’s river delta and never once submerged herself again. If she ever had a Charge, she never speaks of it.
She's the fisher of the Clan, and spends most nights stalking the wide stretch of black-sand beach catching fish for supper. She lures them to the surface with the glow of her lanterns and spears them on white-hot seashell.
Sometimes, when the moon is bright or perhaps dark as the starless sky, she sings. Her song echoes into the depths until strange creatures emerge: fish as long and wide as galleons, strange serpents that glow in a thousand flickering shades, worms and sharks and whales with long, endless teeth. She sings to them, and they join in a wrenching, haunting duet. Then, every time, she burns them, slowly, from the inside out. The ocean boils. The creatures scream. She drags them home to the kitchen.
Nobody questions this. Everybody eats.

Minnow helps Coelageist catch fish--or at least she seems to think she's helping. She can often be found scurrying behind Coelageist in the shallows, snapping up small fry and getting distracted by absolutely anything shiny, whether it be a shimmering oyster shell catching the lantern-light or the silvery scales of an anchovy. Sometimes she'll spend hours in the waves trying to catch a mouthful of phosphorescence in her teeth. Unlike her dragon, she has no qualms about entering the water. Coela sometimes uses her enthusiastic swimming to scare schools of fish into waiting nets. |
