Veloci was not one of the Dragons originally brought back to life in that cave, transformed into creatures of earth and bone. Rather, she was the child of one. While several of the newly awakened dragons went off on their own to find a new life somewhere, others still stuck together in small groups, finding comfort and kinship among Dragons cursed like them. Veloci's birth flock was one of these groups, a small caravan of wandering Fossil Dragons who traveled around Sornieth aimlessly, trading small goods and services in order to get by.
Veloci's parents weren't the first to fall in love, but they were the first to successfully lay eggs. It was quite a dramatic event. By now, several other Fossil dragons had birthed hatchlings and were aware of what would happen, but the caravan was drifting along the middle of nowhere, completely disconnected from the others, and the news hadn't reached them. Veloci's litter was the source of much questioning and fear. Would the curse befall these new hatchlings?? Or would they be spared?? Would some be spared but others feel the effects of the curse? If they did end up cursed, what would it mean for the parents??
Sure enough, though, when the eggs finally hatched, Veloci and all of her siblings were born cursed. Some of the members of the caravan were disappointed, but Veloci's parents looked into her eyes and felt nothing but love.
Veloci was a curious, intelligent Dragon growing up. She wanted to know everything. She was one of those hatchlings who asked difficult questions of her parents, like "Why is the sky blue?? Why is the water blue?? Is dirt made of dragons who failed their first flying lessons and splatted into the ground?? How are hatchlings made??" Her parents weren't very book smart, and had trouble answering most of her questions, but they did their best and admitted when they didn't know things. Veloci, realizing her parents didn't have all of the answers, turned to experiments instead.
She began to dig up bones, studying them and comparing them to the bones jutting out of her own small body and her family's. It became commonplace to see her running around the campgrounds with a femur clutched in her jaws, looking for dragons to compare it with. At this point in her life, she hadn't yet met a regular dragon, and so thought the cursed fossil dragons around her were just how dragons normally looked. She had also, up until now, thought that only dragons had bones. (Her parents tended to pick the bones out of her meals beforehand so she wouldn't choke.) So it confused her when most of the bones she found didn't match up with any of the dragons in her traveling caravan. This was because most of these were the bones of deceased Beastclan warriors, killed in battle by other wandering dragons. Veloci HAD run into Beastclan tribes before-- their caravan was attacked pretty regularly-- but she was always told to go into the back of the wagon and hide. So it would take her a while to figure out where these weirdly shaped bones were coming from.
Her first breakthrough was when the caravan stopped by the Colonnades of Antiquity to trade; her first encounter with non-fossil Dragons. These were dragons, unmistakably, but they didn't seem to have bones. They were made of flesh and blood, not soil and bone and magic. She was bursting with questions by the time they left, and her parents answered them as patiently as they could.

"Momma, why did those Dragons not have bones??"

"They do, honey. You just can't see them."

"Why can't I see them??"

"They're inside their bodies, not outside like us."

"Dragons can have bones inside their body??"

"Yes."

"But then how do we know they have bones if they're inside and we can't see them??"

"Because when a dragon gets hurt, sometimes some of the bones come out of their body."

"Are we hurt?"

"No, we're just different."

"Why are we different??"

Her siblings chimed in at that moment as well, also curious. Why were they different?? What made them so different?? Their parents gave in, and it was that day that the caravan's hatchlings finally learned about the curse and what it entailed. Some of the children were appalled to learn they were cursed, but Veloci, having finally made her first breakthrough, wasn't fazed at all. All this new revelation meant was that she had more exploring to do!!
Veloci's next breakthrough happened in the Shrieking Wilds, during a Beastclans ambush on the caravan. There wasn't enough time to hide the hatchlings (now almost teens) in the back of the caravan, so Veloci finally got to participate in her first battle, much to her parent's displeasure. She and her siblings carried supplies and weapons to dragons who needed it, taking advantage of their size and speed to avoid enemies. They managed to win in the end, when a fellow traveling pack came across the fight and helped them out. They were even able to take captives-- a first for them.
However, it wasn't so much the battle, but the aftermath that spurred the gears in her brain. For once, she was around for the cleanup, watching as adult dragons buried the fallen with their belongings and offered captive survivors the possibility of becoming their first familiars. While studying the captives, she had a thought. Beasts bled like dragons did. They spoke like dragons did. They were made of flesh and blood, like dragons were. Did they have bones?
Veloci was going to find out. In the next few days, she dug up several 'mystery bones', comparing them to the newly christened familiars around the caravan. And sure enough, several of them were a match. And the few that weren't... were just another mystery to solve.

This was the beginning of her new career as a Paleontologist.
