Occupation Researcher Partner Charm Alignment Lawful Good |
═══════════════════════════════════════════ NAREN ; The Runaway Professor ═══════════════════════════════════════════ Naren was, once upon a time, nothing more than a professor and researcher, living a mostly quiet life with his students and his work on Theoretical Cursebreaking at the University of Mirrorlight. When a wandering clan came into town, he considered them to be nothing more than an oddity, a mere diversion from his daily routine, even as the colourful and charming nomads seemed to be everywhere he looked, causing a major distraction for his students, all of whom swapped gossip and hearsay about their foreign visitors. Most notable of all was the clan leader, Charm, a beautiful young skydancer who had led her clan to his university in the hopes that their extensive library would hold some clues the breaking of her curse. Naturally, she found that Professor Naren of Theoretical Cursebreaking would prove a valuable resource- he found her in his office often, a stack of books in claw, with a barrage of questions for him about what she had read. Though she had no formal education, she was clever, quickly absorbing everything he explained. From office consults to discussions over dinner, Naren soon found that he was spending nearly all his free time with Charm. And when Charm admitted that she could feel her curse beginning to take effect, and that she would be gone within the week- Naren's disappointment was immense. For those last few days together, he cleared as much time as he could, knowing that it would be month before she came back- if she came back at all. When Charm and her clan left, Naren felt like maybe he understood, just a little, what Charm's curse felt like. It felt like an ache that nagged persistently, a frustration with every aspect of his surroundings, a desperate need to be elsewhere. Only for him, it wasn't a vague need to be literally anywhere else. His longing was for something very specific- to be at her side. It was quite a stir at the university when Professor Naren left. He was gone overnight, abandoning his tenured position with only a short message of apology to his students and an even shorter letter of resignation to the dean. It took two weeks for Naren to catch up to the clan, but he finally did. As they picked their way through the Driftwood Drag, Naren swooped down from the sky, a bright shimmer of blue landing with a squelch in the mud. "Naren? What are you doing here?" Charm asked. "I- hah- I'm here to join your clan." Naren panted, out of breath, his wings sore, unused to such long flights. With all her clan members watching, Charm did not throw herself at him as she wished to, but only offered him a tiny smile. "Welcome aboard." | x |
