BEGIN Vertumnus was curled around a spiked crag of rock, looking out to the world beyond him with a sigh; empty, like every day.

Though the druid enjoyed the quiet, he couldn’t help but feel extremely lonely. He missed home, but where was home? He wanted to say this place was it, but it wasn’t. It was too empty, too abandoned. His home was nothing like this? But what was his home? Vertumnus doubted its existence for a split second.

He let out another heavy sigh as he got to his feet, rubbing his eyes. He supposed it was time to move on again. Perhaps Dragonhome wasn’t the place for him to be. The Southern Icefield would probably be a better place to visit. As the Imperial let his mind wander, he left the rock he was beside, starting his journey again, careful not to ruin any of the earth below his talons.

Time passed, and he felt himself grow solemn. There was still nothing around him. Had he found a wasteland? Vertumnus found it hard to hold on to hope…

But then, he felt something bump into his foot, followed by a loud, almost exaggerated grunt. The druid jumped a tad in surprise, looking down at his feet. He spotted a Coatl hatchling, glimmering like a mang on a summer’s day.

“Owwwwww!” they cried, rubbing their head. Vertumnus watched as the hatchling blinked up at him, eyes wide. “Woah! You’re so big!”

The Coatl’s comment made the druid smile.

“Well of course,” he said, observing the Coatl as they got to their feet and circled the druid before them.

“Who are you? What are you? You look weird. Are you a weirdo? What even is a weirdo?” The hatchling let dozens of questions pour out of his mouth, and Vertumnus listened, despite most of the questions mixing together and not making any sense. The druid waited until the hatchling had finished to answer.

“I am Vertumnus, a wandering Springwalker, or druid.”

“Vertum-what-nus?”

“Vertumnus, small one.”

“Oooh.”

The Imperial watched as the hatchling tried to process this new information, his face blank. “Well, I’m Tropic! Also, you didn’t tell me what a weirdo was,” said the Coatl when he finished thinking, his face returning to its energetic self. Vertumnus chuckled, patting Tropic’s head.

“I am not sure what a… ‘weirdo’ is myself.”

“Well you’re no help!”

Vertumnus found himself unable to frown despite Tropic’s attitude; he wasn’t alone anymore! Any kind of company was good company now.

“... Heeeyy, why are you here, anyways? All alone?” Tropic eventually asked, and that was what made the druid’s smile fade away.

“I… do not know that either,” said the druid. He had been wandering for so long that he had forgotten why he was doing so in the first place. Yes, it was to find home, but again, what was home? Where was home? “I have been trying to find my way home, yet I do not even know where home is. I have been wandering… for days, perhaps longer.”

Tropic blinked up at Vertumnus, processing his words. “... Ouch. That’s really sad,” he commented, head low. “I’m all alone, too. I don’t know where Mama or Daddy or home is either.”

The druid’s frown deepened, and he closed his eyes; such a young dragon didn’t deserve to be all alone! No one did. He pondered what he could possibly do, before an idea finally struck him, and he opened his eyes, his frown fading away.

“Tropic, how would you like to travel with me? We could both use some company while we search for our home,” he offered with a gentle smile, and Tropic lit up.

“REALLY!?”

“Really, young one.”

The young Coatl leapt into the air with a joyous holler, fluttering his small wings. Vertumnus chuckled as Tropic crawled onto the top of his head, holding onto his antlers. “Let’s go let’s go let’s go!” chirped the hatchling, newfound excitement bubbling inside him. The Imperial gently shook his head in amusement, before he started onward again, feeling happier about wandering again.

As he wandered, his mind started to do the same, the same question echoing in his head; would he ever find home? The druid pondered the question, before he found his conclusion.

He already found home, it had come right to him. This place in Dragonhome, with his newfound friend, Tropic
