Your eyes are closed, your brows scrunched together. The crowd, their whispered conversations, their laughter and scorn— have nothing to do with you. They have nothing to do with you. Yet the sounds are melding together, soft at first. Now they are loud; raucous. A cacophony.

You can't think. You want to think. You wished you could think of anything. Everything is distracting you. Background noise. White noise. Just buzzing in your ears.

The piece of paper in your hands feel heavy for some reason. Your sister looks at you with slight concern, noticing your strange expression.

There's nothing to be concerned about. You did good in school— in university. Certainly not one of the best but you'd like to think your results are far far better than you thought they would be when you first started out.

Why is it, then, that you feel so empty? Like you've lost meaning in life. You rub your thumb against the diploma feeling the strange, comforting texture.

You've graduated! Congratulations to you, congratulations on no longer rushing towards deadlines and stressing over courseworks and projects and exams (at least until you and a job).

Congratulations. No more late nights, no more sitting together with your housemates or flatmates or roommates as you rush to finish your respective works. No more barging into their rooms armed with snacks and drinks as you whine about homework.

You feel accomplished. You feel tired. You feel the adrenaline and high leave you.

That's it. You're done now. Done.

From now on, you'll be walking different paths. Some of you might stay together, some of you may end up parting.

Your sister calls your name again, you look up. She asks if you're okay. You smile, and say yes.
You're fine. You'll be fine. You're just a little lost now, but find your footing again eventually. The emptiness goes as it always does.

You step forward.
