It was a beautiful evening. The stars flickered in the darker parts of the sky, while to the west gold and crimson lit up the horizon like fire. The dark silhouettes of towering pines wavered softly in the rushing breeze and pink flowers curled, preparing for the night’s chill.

Snort was in a good mood. She smiled and hummed as she drove her wagon forward. She wore a purple tailcoat, matching the striped purple and green of her feathers. Her plumed collar jingled with merry bells as she skipped along cheerfully.

The road was well-traveled. Decades of use had worn grooves in the dusty trail. Even now, a rainbow of dragons traveled the road, along with wagons pulled by stout familiars. A group of snappers trudged along, earthen eyes low. A trio of Fae nervously fluttered near the trees while a lone Wildclaw slipped between travelers.

All so gloomy, thought Snort with a huff. But her smile didn’t fade. Instead, she whistled to her familiar, a colorful Ampelope who was tugging her small wagon behind. The creature pulled the wagon to the side and unhitched himself, dancing along to stand beside his master.

Snort smiled. “Hello! Hello, lucky travelers! Come one, come all, to witness a show!”

A few of the dragons paused, casting shadowy glances over the Skydancer, but most moved on steadily.

“Mom! Mom! It’s a clown!” called a Tundra hatchling, pulling at his mother’s coat.

“Indeed I am!” said Snort, grinning. “I’m the stupendous, silly Snort! Pleased to meet you. Now what’s that behind your ear?”

She reached a claw towards the hatchling and pulled a golden coin away. “Tada!” The young Tundra giggles with delight as she flicked it towards him. Other dragons began to pause, looking to the Skydancer with a new curiosity.

“Welcome to the show!”
