༻Secrets in the Garden༺

If a dragon is ever lost (literally or ideologically), they can count on Kairo to show them the way. The logical, levelheaded Nocturne can often be found with her nose buried in a book, or with her face inches away from an elaborate map of Sornieth. As bookkeeper extraordinaire, she has the clan’s history memorized and is more than happy to recite it upon request. Kairo wears her title proudly. She always has a book recommendation on hand and could chat for hours about her multiple theories on early draconic folklore. Her most prized possessions are her ancient maps of Sornieth. They are centuries old, and very delicate. Needless to say, Kairo keeps them far from the reach of hatchlings (and Birch). Every tome has a special place in her lair and in her heart. She jokes about how most of the time, she gets along better with books than she does dragons. As she pores over research paper after treatise after essay, she absorbs the information with her flawless memory. This hyper-intelligent bibliophile would be content to spend her whole life squirreled away in her lair surrounded by her favorite smells: Juneflower tea, fresh ink, and crisp pages. On cold winter nights, she adores cozying up beside the fire and poring over the latest installation of her favorite fantasy adventure series. Despite her unequivocal rationality, Kairo is a lover of fiction. There’s something about the invention of new worlds that leaves her entranced. Books with maps at the beginning are especially exciting. Her imagination is vast and limitless. What a treasure it is to sit back and read.

Admittedly, Kairo has a bit of a book hoarding problem. It is quite impossible to take two steps in her lair without elbowing a stack of encyclopedias or a pile of empty scroll cases. She claims to have her own organization system, which is why none of the other dragons have offered to help clean up. They know what happens when they touch Kairo’s books without her permission. Everything has a place, and there is a place for everything. So long as the Nocturne herself understands the system, her clanmates don’t mind. If they wish to borrow something, all they need to do is ask— and swear upon their grandparents’ graves that no ill fate will befall the loaned item.

Broken becomes a new
Her clan nickname is ‘books with legs’ because whenever she emerges from her lair, she’s often carrying a stack of books so high, all anyone can see are her back legs. It is quite an amusing sight. One of her most embarrassing moments involved a patch of solid ice, a handful of star charts, and a steaming cup of oolong tea. To make a rather hilarious story much shorter, her back heel hit the ice wrong. She shot ten feet forward before slamming into a tree trunk, spilling her tea, and scattering the charts everywhere in a flutter of musty pages. Her first instinct was to save the scrolls, not herself, so she ended up with a nasty bump on her head. This earned her a long lecture from Patches, who does not appreciate her clanmates putting themselves in danger. Kairo did not learn her lesson. She still swears she made the right move by rescuing the star charts.

Besides consuming books and scrolls written by others, Kairo also does a fair amount of her own writing. Some of it is related to clan duties, such as her tasks in record-keeping and lore maintenance. She is also working on an extended map of the Everbloom Gardens, to ensure that her clanmates know how to navigate the areas surrounding their home. However, she also embarks on journeys of creativity every now and again. She and Gizelle co-facilitate their own creative writers’ group, where they swap works with each other for the purpose of edits and feedback. Kairo can be a harsh critic with soaring expectations, but Gizelle can take it. They know their friend is only trying to help them improve. As a poet, Gizelle can be slightly superfluous with their feedback. Kairo appreciates it nonetheless. Sometimes, all she needs is a fellow creative to share her experiences with.

More than anything, this Nocturne is a lover of stories. Whether it’s the stories of continents told by maps, the stories of dragons told by books, or the stories of nature told by charts, Kairo is obsessed. The more knowledge she is able to acquire, the more prepared she feels to find her place in a vastly changing world. She believes that books are avenues to enlightenment. They are the keys to the secrets of the universe. With her passion and her reading glasses, she will unlock the mysteries of Sornieth and beyond. She hopes that her clanmates will be just excited as she is to share in her new discoveries.
