☙𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓫𝓲𝓫𝓫𝓮𝓷 𝓵𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓻𝓼❧
The sun set over their den, hidden away from the world and spilling gentle pink light across the huge lake that lay before them. Cupid could not stop watching the pretty scene in front of him. His heart felt open and light, lighter than it had felt in all his years of existence, and he found that he could raise his head much higher when it didn’t have a crown on it. He spread his wings and basked in the pearlescent glow of the afternoon melting into night; it was a brilliant metamorphosis, a process that was rivalled by none in its elegance, and it was Cupid’s favourite time of day.

It was his favourite time of day because whenever he saw the pink sunset, he saw Milda in its beautiful depths.

They’d met on a walk, when both of them had been granted a rare respite from the paperwork and governing that all royals had to endure. Cupid remembered that day as clear as glass. He’d been exhausted, dragging his feet through damp grass and trying not to hang his head miserably, when suddenly, a bright pink flash caught his attention and made him notice the palace lake before him.

Stunned into silence by its resplendence, his gaze followed the soft pink beam of light straight across the lake. That moment was when he and Milda met eyes for the first time.

Their love was an explosion of cherry blossoms and cotton candy and all things pink - a chemistry no couple could ever hope to rival. They didn’t have to say a word. They just looked each other in the eyes and fell in love. Milda was the most beautiful thing Cupid had ever seen, even more beautiful than the sunset high above them, casting a glorious golden glow over Milda that only made her ethereality holier.

He didn’t remember if he threw himself into the lake and swam across to her, or if he circled the perimeter by running as fast as he could. He just knew that she would meet him halfway - and so Cupid and Milda, two royal dragons with the future of separate kingdoms resting upon their shoulders, threw themselves into the sweetest and warmest embrace any dragon had ever felt.

They tried to hide their relationship for political reasons; their parents were not exactly friends after that trade agreement had fallen apart. But as they snuck lovestruck glances at each other from across meeting hall tables and expensive parties, people began to take notice.

Their love was fragile, fluffy, and frail. It was a bird made of the pinkest sugar, one that would quickly melt under the relentless rain if left out too long. And so when the rain came, Cupid and Milda ran. They ran from everything they had, taking nothing but each other, sheltering the pink sugarbird from the downpour with their bodies. They ran and ran and ran until they reached a place where there were no more storm clouds and the sky was pink with the sunset.

They did not, by any means, wish to abandon their people. They were just more afraid of abandoning what they had built so carefully and lovingly between them. There were times where they’d regret running away; there were times where they discussed heading back and apologising. But they never did, because they knew that their pink sugarbird could not handle another moment in the storm. Instead, they held each other and snuggled together in a feathery pile, watching the sunset splash a fantastic gallimaufry of purple and pink and orange across the clouds.

Recently, they’d discussed having children. Cupid had been excited about the idea, talking rapidly about the future as Milda smiled at him fondly. He told her that if they ever had children, he’d want to be the best father. She asked him how he’d do that, and after thinking for a while, Cupid had replied that he’d give them a mission to carry out.

Milda had raised an eyebrow at him bemusedly, thinking that he’d give them a ridiculous purpose like growing to a certain height or shedding the least feathers to make clean-up easier. But Cupid wasn’t thinking about those - Cupid was thinking about something that could guide them for a lifetime.

He blinked, letting the sunset bathe his face in warmth, and exhaled. Tranquility was always one of his favourite things. And as the sky turned a dark purple, like the skin of a bruised fruit, he felt Milda come up to him silently, entwining her tail with his. Cupid leaned into her and smiled to himself.

He knew what mission he’d give his future kids now. He’d tell them to love with their heart and soul, to love so strongly and purely that they’d give up being kings and queens to be with the person they loved.

Cupid felt something in his stomach flutter, a flush of euphoria rising from the deepest recesses of his chest. One day, he’d have kids. One day, he’d tell them about love. But for now, there were still many sunsets dotted with pink sugarbirds ahead for him and Milda to watch.
