Biography

Knife, the newest addition to a pack of hardscrabble anomalies, was found in the plague-wastes by Hrist. The older woman, caught in the middle of training a batch of children, was greatly amused by the tenacity of the youngster, and so took her in, seeing the taint of anomalous flesh on her already. Knife's hunger for bones is a running joke among the Anomalous Pack of ferals, now; they tease her, and those who irritate them find Knife set on them for bone extraction, much to the amusement of the Ferals.

There's unmistakable energy bursting from their pocked hides, some of which catches in the pockets of air between their feathers and skin. It has a strong, rusty smell. The soft earth of the wasteland clings to their toes as they walk, scrambling for the blood in their veins.

Vigdis carries them in her arms, past the empty void of the wasteland that surrounds the castle and into the lands of the west. Dried bones crack underfoot as she lands in a spot directly under the bright midday sun.

She places the hatchlings on the ground. They start pecking at the shattered bone shards, swallowing some and making toys out of others. Good, Vigdis cocks her head to the side, a distant look in her eyes, they already know.

She takes off, scattering a cloud of dust and mites. The hatchlings pay their mother no mind, too busy building piles of small bones. Soon, however, the pitiful remains around them will lose their interest. They will travel farther to collect more.

Who knows where that path will take them.

We demand bone.

Bone contains marrow. Marrow produces blood. Blood nourishes flesh.

Bone is the hardest to create. Flesh and blood are easy. Easily broken, easily mended. Bone takes time, takes knowledge, takes practice.

We demand bone.

Bone remains when flesh rots and blood dries. It is what remains of lineages, of your precious kingdoms. When decay takes the body, jewels and chains hang from the bone. We will have your flesh and blood in time, but we must take your bone.

By all means, we will have your bone.
