VON EBONHIDE, FRIEDRICH
Young master von Ebonhide
"Knowledge is power, they say..."

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
___________________ Friedrich von Ebonhide, the sole young master of the von Ebonhide House, fated to take over his father's reins in the far future. He is the younger, near-spitting image of Master von Ebonhide; equal parts charming and charismatic.

An aristocrat from birth, he leads a life unlike others. He was born into the old House of the von Ebonhides, descending from the Starfall Isles as illustrated seekers of knowledge. That, his ancestors were — much else could be said regarding the current head of the house. Nevertheless, they continue to uphold their 'creed', to support budding endeavours in pursuit of shrouded mysteries. Though having a lower profile than his distinguished father, he still appears much like the Master, in ways of mannerism and air. But beneath that title lies a facade, born from the misfortunes of one's birth, of the ridiculing strings of fate and the lack of power against it.

___________________ Friedrich was born to the Lord von Ebonhide and his wife, Bianka von Ebonhide. Though bearing a clutch much plentiful, he was the only hatchling to emerge from his mother's nest. Life as a young noble was rigid, strict — the mansion of the von Ebonhides was a place devoid of proper childhood memories, warmth being a thing it knew naught of. As the only child, he received much of his mother's coddling. His father was known as a charitable man, expending his wealth for children of the unfortunate, in hopes that they would have the opportunity to reach for the stars. "If one could not pursue knowledge himself, then one shall aid others in pursuing knowledge," — such was the 'way' of the von Ebonhides, after all. His father was untalented in ways their ancestors were, and as such, he resorted to the latter.

But for all that he was charitable, his charity was only skin-deep. Children on the streets of their town praised and thanked the Master von Ebonhide for his good graces, but what good was he to his own son? He was a saint to others, but such a grace, it was as if he deigned to bestow it upon the child he had brought into the world. Young Friedrich's solace in those times spent wasting away what could have been a fruitful childhood, was his mother. It went without saying, of course. His mother had always been a warm person, her loving figure never without the metaphorical sun illuminating it. It was a haven of sorts to Friedrich, young but worn down from the premature awareness of his responsibilities, and of the path that had been carved out for him by his father, before he had even been born.

Despite the dreariness, Friedrich was quite content then; his mother was there, after all, to shoo away his dissatisfactions. Yet, his light was extinguished as he was at a tender age, torn apart from him cruelly — the reminders of that event marr his body still, as if in taunt. Though now a vague memory gone misty, the image of his mother's face before her demise, and of the unemotional response of his father, still burns bright in his mind. As bright as the flames that once almost engulfed him, indeed.

Perhaps this was the reason why Friedrich had never been close with his father — they were always a careful distance apart, both parties seemingly aware of their growing distaste for one another, especially as Friedrich matured in age. Rebellion was not a word in his dictionary; he had never wavered on his opposing stance on his father, but be that as it may, he was born a noble, born prestigious. Rebellion was something childish; and he, was not. Far from it, in fact; deign to show 'weakness' to his father, or to allow him a hint of a flaw to taunt at. Being the Young Master von Ebonhide was a pretence, a role he was required to act out before others — and that, opposed to childish rebellion, was acceptable. His motive for this was always unclear; he had nothing to lose, nothing to fear losing. His mother had already passed, body reduced to ashes. It was not unlike an act of cowardice — perhaps, unbeknownst to him, he had always been under the palm of his father's hand.

Carrying out the responsibilities of his father had never been a fulfilling task for Friedrich. To dabble in the sciences, to make up for what his father lacked, and to scout promising talents in hopes of them lending their skills to the von Ebonhides... long ago, he had been aware of what it was all for — wealth. Friedrich had never found it tasteful, and every 'spark' of 'talent' sent the von Ebonhides' way were, to him, mere dull gems; not diamonds in the rough. But Joachim — Joachim was different. Where others were blunt, he was sharp. A star whose spark did not deceive, and had the potential to shine brighter.

Now, Joachim was one he wished to keep away from his father's eyes of greed as much as possible. He had offered the other an opportunity to grow, with the help of funding for his researches. This was a part of his responsibilities, when his father didn't see things important enough to concern him. It was an offer not given much deliberation, to Friedrich's fortune.

He could not hide this matter from his father, but he could, at the very least, prevent their meeting one another. Such a person... he wouldn't let him be sullied by the hands of the despicable man he had to call 'father'. But of course, his father was well aware, and what good would it be if he did not parry his son's laughable attempts at hiding away the gem he found? Neither could Friedrich control Joachim's natural curiosity, and thus was the beginning of what was to be yet another arc of despair for him.

Behind closed doors, where the commonplace was oblivious to the true nature of the Lord von Ebonhide they revered, was the dabbling in illicit dealings. The sale of artifacts, the sale of elixirs that could modify a dragon's body... and the sale of other dragons, be it hatchlings or adults. It was a hidden black market, something Friedrich had been long aware of. Something he did not agree with, yet took no action against. It was the reason why his father had been scouting 'talented' alchemists — in hopes that they would procure a magical cosmetic that would change the appearances of dragons. Something that would drive up the prices of the hatchlings sold, many of which were like Joachim; born into the world alone, without a trace of their family. And Joachim was among those alchemists being used for said matters, unbeknownst to him.

It was the reason why Friedrich had never wanted Joachim to be acquainted with his father. If there was anything his father was talented in — anything at all — it was exploiting others. Joachim was better than their previous recruits by leagues. If keeping him in the dark and letting him believe his works were nothing more than 'fun little projects' was all that took to keep him, then so be it. But Friedrich had never felt keen on this idea; it wasn't just his hatred for Joachim building relations with his father, it was his apprehension, the fear that Joachim would unravel the truth that was hidden from him.

He always did, after all, and it was no different here. It was something that branded him a traitor, a liar just as despicable as his father. It was as though Joachim had struck him with the very sword he had thought him to wield — but was there really no truth in the other's words? Joachim had always had an impassive face, never showing the little thoughts that ran around his head; despite this, Friedrich prided himself on being a skilled decipherer of the other's emotions, by the subtle flattenning of his fans, the instinctual, minute changes of his body's expression. But in that moment, Joachim was no longer easily readable — an affect of his experiments, turned into a Skydancer. He had never wished more for Joachim's research to have failed then; it was an excrutiating irony to face, the fact that he could no longer read Joachim like a book, while the other could perceive his feelings with frightening accuracy.

A coward he was, in Joachim's eyes. He never saw the alchemist again from that day onwards; he had disappeared completely, away from the nauseating shadow of the House of von Ebonhide, away from the person who he had trusted yet betrayed him so.

From that day onwards, his stance as the young master von Ebonhide had changed, even if slightly. Perhaps he was pushed by the words and the criticism flung at him by Joachim; somebody he cherished, somebody he could not bear to be viewed by in such bad light. As if to atone for his sins and prove to the other that he wasn't a despicable villain, wasn't like his father — even if deep down, he knew, that that day was the last time those feet would stand on von Ebonhide grounds.

Private musings.

About Joachim—
"Joachim Vogel... he's talented, in more ways than one. Perhaps if things had been different back then, we wouldn't have parted ways. ...Hm, such is the consequences of fate, after all. Had I been born another person, he wouldn't have... come to despise me."

About Joachim— part II
"I wonder when it was that I started to become less perceptive of him. He had always been easy to decipher, for me. It's simple, with the way his fans would begin to compress when his temper was growing short. A sign to hold your tongue and rethink your argument, it was. I was constantly careful with that. But of course, there was that... experiment. Now, Joachim was never really... a Skydancer, at heart. Up til then he had always been a Bogsneak. This was just a change in appearances. A change in appearances, yet he seemed to become distant; or, it was just the hindrace of him losing his tells. ...Maybe that went to show how much I knew of him, which was nothing to speak of. Pathetic, really... I thought I had known him so well."

About Joachim— part III
"He was sharp as a Skydancer, where others' emotions were concerned. It made me anxious, one time too many. At times, it were as though he could see right through me — it was... frightening, to say the least. As though one day he would unravel the truth based on that alone. ...Ha, that he did, of course. I should have known, it was only a matter of time. Nothing else could have persuaded Joachim to stay. He had nothing to lose, nothing to gain; nothing worth gaining. Profiting from the lives of others was never something he would have associated himself with, and yet he did, unknowingly so. I've never agreed with my father, even on this, but what use are my protests anyways? He had already made up his mind, and damned was I if I were to try to stop him. ...A coward, he said. No better than my father. I suppose... he wasn't all that wrong."

About Sigmund von Ebonhide—
"Ah yes, Father. I've never liked having to call him that. The poor little children he 'saved' quite like to think of him as one, though. It's laughable, really, that I would receive more from him if I were born some lowly commoner's son, as opposed to being his own kin. People would praise and admire their marriage, back when my mother was alive and well. What a loving pair of husband and wife, wasn't it. But of course, as is already known, this man cares not for his own family."

About Sigmund von Ebonhide— part II
"Mentions of my likeness to him is not something I haven't heard before. 'Like father, like son', many people love to say. My aunts, uncles, distant relatives I have no care for, even the typical person on the street who has heard of Lord von Ebonhide's charitable deeds. I would be lying if I said it never irked me even once. But of course, none of their remarks have ever wounded my pride more than hearing those same words come from the mouth of a certain somebody. Of course, I was determined this time to prove it wrong — except it really wasn't that far from the truth, was it?"

About Sigmund von Ebonhide— part III
"The relationship between me and my father nowadays is... far more strained, I suppose one could say. Ha. Now, even in public, he dares not appear alongside me, as though in fear of his old headaches flaring up again. I may be well past the age of 'childish rebellion' by now, but as they say, starting late is still preferrable to never starting. Joachim's words from that day have stuck to me like a burr. I've since then retreated from the post I had been given before, leaving everything to the one who started them. He certainly is more haggard nowadays — my father, that is. Perhaps age has caught up to him and he has started to lose his sharp senses; they've grown dull, compared to the bygone days. That greedy, money-eating side of him is starting to show more easily, indeed, and it is of no help in gaining the trust of others. Really, the only reason why institutions still cling on to him is for the money. His temper as of late is ridiculously short, too; ah, but in private, of course. The old mule still has half a mind for appearances."

The library—
"My ancestors supposedly hailed from the Starfall Isles; hence, our 'creed'. The way our House has downgraded from being pursuers of knowledge to financial aides of pursuers of knowledge is... laughable, to say the least. Anyway, this 'library' was the house of my ancestors. Since they left the Starfall Isles, it remained uninhabited. I gave it to Joachim, in hopes that it would help him in his research, or just please him even. Books have always been a favourite of his to collect; books of any kind, no matter the expertise. I've always wondered how far he had covered the walls and shelves with his collection and... I'm glad to see it still being well-kept."

"Knowledge"—
"That which is a double-edged sword... Alchemy, archaelogy, astrology — the pursuits of knowledge and their fruits exist to aide Sornieth and its dragons, to expand the current possibilities of the world. Though that is only true for the most part. Where life still continues to exists, so will 'corruption' flourish and taint the goodwill of noble goals. Such is the way of people. Defiling the creations of innocent alchemists, morphing them into something to profit off of. I suppose it is laughable, coming from me... but such is the truth of the world, no matter how ugly it is. This, I'm sure, he had a difficult time coming to terms with..."

Vogel
"He wasn't always Joachim Vogel. It's nothing out of the ordinary, to just have a given name. I suppose a surname would have indicated some sort of prestige, or history — the remembrance of ancestors long gone. But then again, it is merely a thing which one attaches to their name; perhaps its true significance isn't as much as it seems to be. ...Well, despite that, it was still something he took interest in for a short while. Not something surprising, I presume — he had been thrust into this world of nobles and aristocrats after all, a place where not a single person went without a surname, as if it were some flair. He wanted one too; perhaps feeling out of place, like he didn't belong. ...He never needed to belong, but either way, it is not as if I hadn't encouraged him back then too. For a dragon with a mind far ahead of others, the reason behind his 'surname' was quite... simple, really — birds were his favourite."

Joachim's last expedition—
"To see is to believe; and having not seen it, I suppose one can say that I am in denial. How could I not be? I hadn't heard from him since he left. The most were, usually, a mention of his name throughout a few conversations, perhaps a citation or two from what little he published, or even the once again fruitless attempts of the Alchemists' Guild to contact him and beg for his presence to grace their meetings. And after so long, for the first news of his wellbeing to be about his passing... what else can I do but be in denial of the fact that he is no longer of this world..?"

Joachim—
"How I miss him so; but I know very well that I would not be qualified to look him in the eye either way. The fragments of the past should have long dissolved with his passing, yet I...
sigh ...I can't bear to forget him."

Idle chatter.

About Tora—
"That young apprentice of Joachim's, wasn't it? He's quite capable himself, if I do say so. Perhaps short of Joachim's skill, but nothing enough to discredit his abilities — I'm sure he has the potential. Something holds him back, is all. He seems quite critical of himself, and being the apprentice of a renowned alchemist surely is a daunting position."

About Tori—
"Ah, yes. That companion of Tora's, a swordsman from a village in the Windswept Plateau, apparently. They're quite close, Tora and him — childhood friends, I believe. At the very least, it's reassuring to see their bond being an unbreakable one."

About Tsukihyakushi—
"One might say his eyes are unnerving, and I would not disagree. It certainly does feel as though he can peer right into the depths of your heart and its secrets within..."

About Reinhardt—
"Many times I've found myself cursing this useless thing — to have had Joachim as his charge, yet so easily failed the very thing he had sworn to do as a Guardian..! .....Truly, as they say, the failure of a Guardian to keep his charge safe is a terrible blight on his honor."

The High Order—
"The Sunbeam Ruins' most prestigious and well-respected organization of the law; the highest order, as its name suggests. Imperials have been absent from its polished posts since the rising of Emperors; how could we, 'mistakes of our creator', dare to set foot in her very home? But, here I am, occupying one of its said seats. Of course, I received no cordial welcome, though I expected none either way. The bond between us Imperials and our Pearlcatcher siblings is sour."

House von Ebonhide—
"Joining the High Order was akin to cutting ties with my father. Our grudges have festered for years, too far along to be saved. Better to cut the whole leg off than to try and bandage it up to no avail. Since then I've scarcely returned home; earned myself the title of a workaholic, but I suppose it's better than to face that old mule at the estate. I can't even begin to imagine what new sorts of provocations he'll hurl at me when we meet; he's growing old, but that snake tongue of his never eludes him."

The Dustcarve Dig—
"A Sornieth-wide collaborative dig, inviting dragons from all walks of life to lend a hand. The Dustcarve Dig was something, without a doubt. Naturally, my father was a sponsor of the Guild — still is, though I doubt the Master Archaelogian and her team are particularly thrilled. ...But it's not as if they have a choice, anyway. Without a source of funding, there would be no Dustcarve Dig."
