If you venture far enough into the Araluen rainforest, you may hear the birdsong change, wild and unusual, and notice the fungus growing thickly here, enthusiastically embedded in the wet earth and on trunks which span dense and boundless across the floor.

Further along, a clearing of large, moss-covered granite boulders surrounds a crisp, clear fresh waterhole. Below the shallows and the dead branches and the mud resides Araluen, who gets on — for the most part — in peaceful solitude with the moss, the walking fish, and the occasional passing turtle.

For while she is mild of manner, cool as the lake below the gleaming mirror atop her water-home, her skin and fangs speak poison, and if needed — if the survey of any guest to her realm were not satisfactory — her voice and charms could lull the once alert traveller into that wet, dank earth, to unexpected peaceful rest.
