The Cryptid

He was never given a name at birth. Although that didn’t quite matter, considering it had only been him since hatching. He never knew where he came from, or how his egg ended up where it did. In a land where it was hard to survive. Full of humidity and little food. But he adapted. Learning how to survive in swampy terrain. He was alone yes. But he kind of preferred it that way. Given he’d never really experienced anything else. However, once on a while a line or group of dragons would occasionally fly by, passing over his unusual home. But his existence was all speculation. Was he real? Or was he just the result of an exhausted dragons mind playing tricks on them. Just a mere figment of imagination. He’s heard the rumors. Young dragons have become visiting from all around in hopes of seeing him. The stories he’s heard. The names he’s been called. His favorite so far has been Bunyip. And apparently by day he hunted from the murky water, hidden beneath the surface of the water, waiting to strike any unsuspecting victims who dare wade into his turf or brave the edges of the water. And by night it was land that became his hunting grounds, targeting young dragons to feast on.

It was ridiculous. He would never do anything so…so horrendous. Truthfully he preferred to feast on the vegetation in the water. He couldn’t bring himself to eat meat, for any other creature he came across he enjoyed the company of. He was too afraid at this point to make himself known to other dragons. Especially since there were some that wanted to hunt him. As if he were a trophy to be won. So now, more than ever, staying hidden was his only option. No matter how lonely it made him. But he was fine, really. This was his life. And he wasn’t completely alone. He had his pet frog to keep him company. When it came around that was. So he was fine with this.

Besides he'd been able to delve deeper into the terrain, discovering an area not quite discovered by outsiders. So he still had a safe haven to sleep and eat in peace at least. But he still ventured out, watching unwelcome visitors trespass his territory, completely camouflaged by his surroundings. He was still curious after all, even if he was afraid of being found. It was quite amazing the amount of variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and voices of the dragons that visited. He’d watch them for as long as he could. He didn’t even know they could talk at first. With him being mute, having spoken a word himself, it scared it him at first. He didn’t know what he’d been hearing at first. But after awhile, he learned to understand. Another thing he’d never done in his life was fly. He’d tried once, but it ended poorly. So he decided it was best to stick to what he knew. After all, he wasn’t like the others that explored his home. To them, he was just a monster. Something to be feared, hated, and hunted.
