the tl;dr is that he's a little bit scatterbrained. like not scatterbrained but not, like, 100% fully aware of consequences of his actions, if that makes sense
he's gotten much better over the years but he was still in uni at the time and he was Pretty Bad About It then

got jumped by her (took a shortcut back to his apartment, as he does, across a fairly quiet street. and it's nexus city, so it's a bit shady, okay, but he's never run into real trouble there. so he doesn't really expect to run into trouble this time, either

anyways, so it's nexus goddamn city, we've got totally ethical scientific practices up the wazoo here. which is to say morals are whatever you so wish them to be. and what most people wish them to be is None.
which is to say, kala was fresh out of the cliche-*** escape and was NOT happy to see someone waltzing across her hiding spot

jackdaw managed to panic hard enough to startle a bit of hesitation into her and then managed to convince her that no, he has nothing to do with whatever she's so jumpy about. and that should have been that, and he should've just taken a safer route from then on

but he uh. did not. for multiple reasons. so (to make a long story short) the two of them eventually became friends

a) fairly sure jackdaw deals with biological samples
like his actual focus is on biology; he's got some knowledge on crime scene investigation though

b) oh boy is there! yeah magical analysis is basically analyzing magical traces left behind in either the ambient magic of the area or like. physically on surfaces/whatever. the microbes present may also have traces of foreign magic. also analysis of physical effects of spells; literally sorniethan ballistics analysis LMAO

c) due to sorniethan life being magic-based too. that means jackdaw does do some magical analysis. it is split into biological(-ish) and spellcraft though, he deals with the biological side ofc

honestly. kinda expected her to end up as a normal person roommate (spoiler alert: she did not. and she is not)
that was mostly subconscious though. like if you asked him he wouldn't be able to give you a coherent answer. but yeah he kinda expected things to settle into "normality"

their actual first case was jackdaw noticing a specific constant ******* escalator outage despite repeated repairs, which was annoying because the nearest staircase is like. a whole hallway down. andleads to a completely different part of the building. and kala, despite jackdaw's protests that someone is probably investigating it, decided to figure it out herself anyways
....the escalator placement is based on a real escalator btw. i ******* hate that thing. no one is purposefully breaking that one though.
but also i have encountered it out of service twice and those are the most god damn unpleasant times i have experienced 👍

also they ended up investigating a couple break-ins in the apartment complex
