In early 2022 one of the rancid pools of the Scarred Wasteland split and leaked its liquid into the ocean. Now off shore in the ice warden's territory a current created by the Windswept Plateau carries that foul smelling liquid like a permanent blood stain on the surface of the water.

Despite its plague looking origins this sub species originates from the ice fields where ice dragons become contaminated with the mutating sludge in the water usually by swimming in the frigid seas.

Some of the dragons even started making up stories about the things that lurk in deep water to try and scare the younglings from swimming in it. Tales of various bloodthirsty beasts with many eyes to watch you with and writhing tails to drag you under are common knowledge for those who live by the water. Some even claim to have seen them and those who have say they look like dragons. Sometimes they look like those who go missing but warped and different.

Although the ice aberrations look fearsome most of them are peaceful and reclusive out in the ice floats. Those who see them either run screaming or every so often try to fight them. Most know who they were before the change but daren't return home for fear of being hunted.

Slick is a black ice variant who lives in the underwater ice caves in the trenches to keep her hidden from the other dragons after one of the passing took a shot at her. She recognized the dragon as one of her friends who was likely out searching for her. Now she's convinced there's nothing left on the surface for her and has resigned to the hidden depths with some of the other aberrations who have had similar experiences. Thankfully her darker colour and patterns help her bland into the rippling black waters.
