Child of the Abyss • The Time Eater • Aberration The Unseen Nexus pulsed with fierce energy. The water around them boiled. Himawari stood in front of her spiral mate, keeping him from harm. It spat out an acid covered egg, pulsing with black tar and goo. Neither of them wanted to go closer. It pulsated with living energy, looking like a living, breathing heart. It twitched, rocking faster and faster. Chason took a hesitant step forward as the pustule burst and out popped a bright orange little...thing. It looked like a tundra child, but not quite, fur matted with leftover albumen. It unfurled, and nine eyes from two heads blinked back up at them. It hissed, eyes bright, and the head on the left snapped at something in front of them. The world shuddered. Chason didn't have words to describe it, but reality itself seemed to twist and fold in the maws of the little creature. The world blinked, and the coral of the outer edges--because nothing alive dared touch the far boundary of the Unseen Nexus--aged before their eyes. As the other head snapped at something a little lower, time seemed to regress, the coral shrinking, some of it even fading away. Chason looked at his mate. Her stern, spiky countenance held the same fear his own had. They were the guardians of the Abyss. They stood against its dangers for their clan. But then, well-enough fed that time itself seemed to crack and churn, the world blinking in and out of reality before settling, the young aberration toddled up to Chason in sinuous uncertain movements, fell against his side, and whimpered. Chason's heart welled with tenderness. As fearsome as it looked, as horrible its abyss given powers might be, it was still just a child. His wife reached out and touched it, stroking its back. It--no she--let out a soft coo, and murmured sleepily. This aberration, this anomaly...what else could they do but take her under their wing? |
