Biography

Marcus | He/him

Proud Member of the Artisan’s Guild

Marcus is a Drelkie from the Ashfall Waste. Since he was young, all he wanted was to learn the ways of the forge and craft alongside dragons. Drelkies can be quite dangerous, and so are usually attacked on sight. So Marcus learned in secret, masquerading as a spiral while watching the forgemasters at work, then trying out what he learned from his observations while they slept.

One night, he was discovered by an elderly dragon named Myrik. Thanks to Marcus’s disguise, Myirk seemed to think he was just a young dragon who couldn’t get a forge apprenticeship. He took Marcus under his wing and taught him everything he knew.

This secret training went on for years, and Marcus became very skilled. One day, Myrik insisted that Marcus should show the other forge dragons his work. Marcus hoped that if they saw what he could do, then they would accept him as a smith, and as an honorary dragon. While the other forgemasters were pleased with his skills, they knew something was off about him. Their suspicions were confirmed when one of them found his pelt. They didn’t hesitate to attack and chase him off of the territory, leaving him with new scars and a broken heart.

What he didn’t see as he fled was Myrik doing his best to hold back the other forgemasters.

After that, Marcus spent a little less than a year traveling around Sornieth, searching for somewhere he could do his work in peace and be seen as a person instead of a monster. He has been chased off and/or attacked quite a few times in his search, leaving him bitter and with serious trust issues. this is when he found the HavenGrove. He was surprised to find that, a; he was immediately recognized as a Drelkie, despite his attempts at disguising himself, and b; he was still given a warm welcome and treated like any other traveler, for the most part. Some of the dragons were still wary…

He decided to stay, and in doing so quickly came into conflict with Geni, another Drelkie, and leader of the clan’s hunters. Geni, brash, but protective of her found family to a fault, did not take kindly to Marcus’s presence.

Aside from Geni, he had another challenge. Metalworking is a distinctly Fire-Flight art, which is not terribly compatible with Nature clans. Fortunately, there was another dragon in the clan with a similar goal, Vequaniel. They became fast friends, and together, along with the help of some other dragons, they built the DayForge, where they both can practice their craft.

As time passed, Marcus learned to open up more and more, and has done his best to reconcile with the traumas of his past. This was in major part due to Vequaniel’s positive influence. His calm, easygoing demeanor was a welcome and much-needed change from the constant stress and anxiety that had hung over most of Marcus’s life up until now, giving him the courage he needed to try connecting with people again.

As they spent more time together, Marcus came to the realization that he had fallen in love with this kind, softspoken dragon. Afraid of rejection, he hid his feelings for a time, but eventually confessed and was delighted to find that Vequaniel felt the same way.

Recently, Marcus has been receiving letters. Myrik had found out what clan Marcus was in. From these letters, Marcus learned that Myrik knew he was a Drelkie all along.
”I may be old, but I’m not that blind!”
The two have been penpals since, and Myrik is planning to visit HavenGrove one day.

Drelkies are creatures that closely resemble dragons in many respects, but with thick manes and faces that more closely resemble lions or wolves with their teeth perpetually exposed. Drelkies have the ability to remove their pelts and masquerade as a dragon of whatever species they resemble, and often use this ability to live among dragons in secret. They’re usually characterized as fearsome, wicked beasts who infiltrate dragon society for nefarious reasons, and are usually chased away or killed when they’re discovered. In truth, while they can be dangerous, most of them just want to be accepted.

HavenGrove has a few resident Drelkies, including Geni, Winter, and Marcus.
