Twosday dragon, identical to his awesome papa, but won't sell
4/4/22 guess I'm keeping him xD

Keep mistaking him for his father ;>.>

"We protect watermelons!" Bailan proudly told a heartred croaker. The croaker blinked, unimpressed by the statement, and launched itself into the air. “Melon come back! I don’t fly yet! I can’t protect in the sky!” Bailan had overheard his father say it was their important job to protect melons, but you had to be near the melon to protect it. He quickly rushed into the forest to follow the croaker.

Bailan saw many red and green plants during his pursuit, but didn’t have enough time to learn if they were melons or not. “Hi maybe melons! I’ll protect you next time!” He was a bit worried though. If they were indeed all melons, he’d have a hard time looking after everyone on his own. Bailan decided when he returned home he’d ask his father for help.

He continued to chase the croaker until it landed in a tall tree. “Don’t move!” Bailan tried to climb the tree, but his little talons couldn’t pierce the thick bark. "Okay, maybe move a little? Come down here?” He waited for a reaction, but wondered if he was too far away to be heard. “MAYBE MOVE DOWN HERE?” Bailan realized he’d forgotten the special word and added, “PLEASE?”

Even the special word wasn’t enough. He sat down on one of the tree’s roots and sighed. “Maybe this melon is a protector and doesn’t need protected?” He wondered if the ‘melon’ was mad at him for offering unneeded help. “SORRY IF I MADE YOU MAD!” The sky had grown dark and he couldn’t even see the branch it was on anymore.

Bailan decided to go back to where the maybe melons were and see if they needed him. He hadn’t paid attention to his surroundings when he rushed through the woods, but he wasn’t worried since he thought he had a pretty good sense of direction.

Several hours later taught him that he did not.

Finally Bailan saw a light off in the distance and walked towards it. "I'm glad father left the light on for me." He continued to talk to himself so it wouldn't be so quiet. With only a short ways to go, he broke into a sprint and popped out into a clearing. "Not melons!" He cried out in dismay as his eyes swept over the strange dragons sitting around campfires. Then he spotted what he was looking for.

They weren't familiar, but there was no doubt that they were a group of melons! Bailan made his way over and curled up between two of them. There was nothing more comforting than being in a patch.

"And who is this?" The Ridgeback Bailan was next to asked the nocturne on his other side.
"I thought he was yours, Arvia. Came right over to sleep between us," The nocturne replied.
"That's funny. I thought he was one of your relatives for the same reason. Hey kid, wake up."
Bailan felt a tap on his shoulder and opened an eye. He stared in awe at the pointy nose of the 'melon' who was speaking to him.
"Hatchlings should be asleep in their dens. Where are your parents?"
"My home patch. I was protecting the flying melon and don't know where it is now."
The group was silent for a minute.
"That's... unfortunate. It's too dark now, but in the morning we will go look for your... home patch. How's that sound?"
"Okay. Your patch is nice too. I'm so happy to find more melons." Bailan yawned and closed his eyes again.
"I guess we're sleeping under the stars tonight!" The group laughed and continued chatting.
Bailan drifted off to the murmur of their voices.

Bailan woke up to sunlight on his face. The ridgeback
"Ready to find your home patch?"
