Oh, dear, where have my trees gone?

The small dragonet clawed at the empty sky. Beside him, a pool of acid bubbled and churned ominously. At least it was green. He liked green. Though, from the aura of death and bitterness surrounding it, the dragonet certainly did not want to touch it.

---

Canary is one of the kindest dragons in the clan, and that's saying something. Born in the flourishing forest of Nature territory, his love for plants developed long before greenery was torn away from him.

That said, his life seemed to plummet when his new home was found within Plague territory. A barren wasteland, the only green being the pools of bubbling acid. It seemed dreadful, hopeless even; how could he ever survive here?

His dread was met with an idea from Kyan, back then just a hatchling only slightly older than young Canary. She had her own little science setup, and suggested that he could help her experiment with plants in the hopes of creating some that could withstand the diseases in Plague. Canary accepted this offer with pure excitement, and the once closed-off and reserved Kyan was just as enthusiastic with the idea of having another scientist working alongside her.

He grew up this way, constantly assisting Kyan and doing his own experiments as their lab slowly expanded. What was once a small corner of Kyan's room set aside for her experiments was now a nearly full-blown laboratory. This now gave Canary more space to experiment with soil and plants, but his research remained restricted to the laboratory.

This wasn't to the liking of the young scientist, however. After finding himself making a home out of his small garden of trees and flowers, he realized his ambitions stretched beyond some measly saplings. Sure, there was the Butterfly Fields, which the Pearlescent Veilspuns had wielded from their magic. But those plants were fake, created with magic that allowed them to last forever and create a paradise. His ideas when far beyond conjuring magic spells - he wanted to grow a forest, not make one.

Most dragons didn't approve of Canary's visions. They always pointed out that it was useless, when they already had the Butterfly Fields. They didn't see the good in it that Canary did, and even Kyan, his best friend, thought it may be more beneficial if he worked on other things besides growing a whole forest in the middle of a plagued wasteland.

Canary did do this, heeding her advice and staying confined to his small garden full of experiments. He wasn't perfectly happy, but he wasn't about to let that get to him - he still got to study plants, after all. Shouldn't that be enough?

Then, just as he decided to push the idea from his head and focus on other things, he found a hatchling while gathering food one fateful day. They were nothing but a small male Tundra, but with Canary being Canary he quickly took in the young hatchling.

He would come to discover that he may have bitten off more than he could chew when the hatchling, who told him their name was Thorn, began to become problematic.

For one, Thorn would cling to Canary like glue, crying out when the Imperial left him to go to the laboratory. Because of this, Canary brought up the idea of Thorn becoming his apprentice. Though Kyan was supportive at first, things turned around once Thorn was actually brought to the laboratory.

Thorn, though he seemed alright at first, proved to be a bit lacking in manners. Still, he insisted on doing his own thing, despite Canary's numerous attempts to steer him onto the right track. The dragonet seemed miserable around Kyan, and would snap at her if she tried to help him. It seemed hopeless once more, and it resulted in Thorn being kicked out of the laboratory by Kyan, against Canary's wishes.

Canary claimed that he had faith in Thorn, that clearly something was wrong and he was sure giving Thorn a purpose was helping him. But he couldn't ignore the broken beakers and insults his adoptive son would snap at his friends. Kyan quickly pointed out these problems, as well as multiple others, and Canary had no choice but to accept.

He tried to keep Thorn's spirits up, but it was an absolute struggle. He quickly realized that Thorn had a fascination with plants, just as Canary did - however, Canary didn't realize the true extent of it until Thorn found his old plans for an organic forest in Plague territory. Canary simply found the hatchling gazing at the scroll one night, and when he tried to take it Thorn cried out and pulled it closer.

This soon led Canary to learn he wasn't going to convince Thorn to give up this old, rejected idea for a project. Sure, he had noticed Thorn was very fond of his little garden, but a whole forest?

Still, it gave Canary a little flicker of motivation to keep working on this idea, if not only for Thorn's sake. Feeling that this was going to begin a new chapter, Canary proposed an idea to Thorn - changing Thorn's name to Lilac. The dragonet seemed to take this well, and soon they got to work.

Canary found that Lilac, now doing something he actually had a goal for, was a much better student than anticipated. Learning how to care for plants was a breeze, and he even noticed Lilac picked up the science of it all fairly quickly, with the help of lectures and rambles about how Canary managed to get plants that could withstand disease.

After a few years of long, tireless work, the Flourishing Fields were growing perfectly. The trees were fairly tall and all others plants were fully bloomed. At last, Lilac would be crowned head of the fields, by the wishes of Canary. Since then, Canary remains with Kyan in the lair he has always known as home, but has frequent visits to the Flourishing Fields to inspect its progress and help out.

And, of course, most of his visits are simply to visit Lilac. An unbreakable duo since their first meeting.
