KAINE is one of the Empress’ guards; the right claw, the bloodthirsty creature that lurks next to the throne. She waits, evaluating those who come to stand before Sloane.

In a realm where everyone who knows the truth about the Empress has had their mind twisted so they no longer remember, how dangerous is the one woman who is allowed to know?

As long as Sloane has been Empress, Kaine has stood beside her. Simple. Stoic. Loyal. Aggressive, when the time comes. To fight Kaine is to fight a monstrosity that understands the best way to win is to be as brutal as possible, as quickly as possible. She rends her opponents with a hacking ease and roars her triumph before a blood-red throne. Her loyalty is absolute. Twice, would-be rebels have made a very fatal mistake in approaching her.

Twice, Kaine has lopped heads from shoulders.

( Kaine will never forget the bite of frost-cut chains, or the sound of metal on metal. She was runty and small, then, in her cage, a creature to be imprisoned in the cold realm of the ‘Warden. But her savior -- blood red on gilded ferocity -- had other plans; the two of them were desperate, and desperation makes for fire-forged allies. )
