Kailon grows up in the Riftroot lair, surrounded by discussion of the conflict between the two clans. Raised to fight as soon as he can walk, he is put through his paces by his intense father. It is deeply impressed upon him that he must fight to protect what he believes in, lest it be destroyed.

And so, fight he does. He volunteers as soon as he's old enough to accompany scouting missions, hoping that what little he can do will be enough to turn the tides on their enemies, the Cruxrose traitors. In the heat of battle, fixated on the opponent before him, he doesn't notice until too late that he's flown too close to the Portal itself.

He slams into its glowing surface with a sickening sound, and plummets to the ground. And there he is presumed dead, until Murmur finds him.

Awakening slowly in a crude new home, Kailon takes some time to get used to the strange new shape his body has taken- and his reduced control over it. Something else has joined him, in this body. A wordless creature full of hunger, which snaps and claws at the edges of his mind. And while he is full of questions, he knows one thing for certain: the clan he once fought for abandoned him.
