Within the Wispwillow Grove, they believe The Mistress to be the goddess of secrecy and a patron of the suffocating darkness shrouding Her domain- a disciple of the Shadowbinder herself. While Her abilities attest to Her supposed divinity, in reality they are the result of a pact unintentionally forged with the trickster spirits of the grove: power and immortality in exchange for Her soul.

Very few recognize that She is not a Shadow-borne dragon, instead having been born and raised in the Southern Icefields. It is unknown exactly how She came to Sorneith's mainland, but a common theory is that She was once a runaway criminal fleeing from a life sentence spent in the Fortress of Ends. In reality, Shao was an egg thief who fled after stealing an egg rumored to contain the next blessed dragon of the Icewarden. The Mistress is wary of other Ice dragons, silently fearing that they may be agents sent by the Icewarden to seek retribution for Her crimes.

None outside of Her domain speak of their experiences within. Countless who leave are driven insane by the surrounding trickster spirits under Her command, with many more, oddly, not remembering their time there in the slightest. The widespread story across the Tangled Woods remains, however: those who enter Her domain do not leave unmarred.
