A soft rustle and a quiet squeak captured Lavender's attention. She was leading the border patrol that day, and after undertaking Beyond's territory that neighbored theirs, there was far more ground to cover. It was a true tragedy, what happened to her and Waterlillies' baby. Her heavy claws scraped the dusty ground as she swung her head, trying to locate the sound. It wasn't uncommon for hatchlings to be abandoned here, or to run away. The Veilspun pair had already taken on the other foreign dragons and began their own friendly Clan.
A small, tucked hatchling squeaked once more from the underside of a shadowed rock. Drool hung from a string on his jaw, overheated in the humid air. Lavender crouched down beside him and released a dark purring sound, hoping to offer him comfort of some kind. It seemed like a lot of border patrols these days were turning out to be more like rescue missions. A Banescale. I haven't seen one of these before. Lavender thought to herself with a curious head tilt, watching as he mimicked her movements. He was already a big hatchling, and he couldn't have been more than several days old. A deep trill of nervousness shot through her. This was cute now, but what about when he inevitably turned into a mindless killer? The breed was known for it. Rumor had it Harvest harnessed a Banescale herself as a personal guard after Yvalcou's betrayal with Aether.
Lavender stepped back as he emerged from the rock's shadow and bound for her own, avoiding the midday sun like the plague. She could hear her patrol catching up, Beetle herself cooing at the sight of the hatchling. "Must be another lost baby. Should we take him to Beyond?" The fiery Obelisk asked curiously, watching the Banescale yawn.
Suddenly, an extra set of wings erupted from beneath the top ones. The sharp-tipped, leathery wings stretched as if for the first time, and his cold, shimmery eyes twinkled with wonder as he shook them out. Lavender stared down with her jaw hung agape, and then cleared her throat slowly. "Well...that's certainly something new."
