Biography

Pressed Flower
ZINNIA
[ floral • dreamer ]

child of the shadowflowers | naive, imaginative, proud

Zinnia was born of the union between the Shadowbinder's floral guardian and a wayward soldier, hatched long after his father's footsteps had left the Willowisp Grove. He grew up adorned in flowers among Shadowbinder's most beautiful and deadly blossoms alongside his siblings, and all they knew were the acres of florals and a childhood of hunting butterflies and counting stars, Their mother whispered to them that these flowers promised both eternal life and eternal sleep, both a gift from the Shadowbinder, if she chose to crown it upon them. Now and again a stranger's slumbering body would seem to grow in the fields: resting, breathing, silent. They would all weave flowers around their horns and wait for the Shadowbinder to come darken the skies and take them. But as children they always wondered — what brought them? Where did they go?

Zinnia is the youngest of her siblings, ever the more imaginative in the shadow of her two brothers. The ravenous darkness of the gardens never seemed to touch her; on the contrary, she found nothing but beauty in even the most grotesque of flowers. She would make up stories for the slumbering intruders they found. Perhaps that imperial was the prince of a fallen kingdom, or that skydancer a beautiful countess expelled from her home. Zinnia became enamored in these tales instead of the reality and began to dream of a life just her own. No watchful mother, no overbearing brothers, but only herself floating in a fairytale. The fortuitous opportunity came when Zinnia happened upon a sleeping dragon while she was all alone. Instantly it became her secret, the promise of a life beyond what she currently lived. And then she began to think — what if, somehow, she could wake them up?

❝ Stay up with me. I miss your stories. ❞
❝ Mother says you're gone, but I hope you're pursuing your dream somewhere, brother. ❞
