There is magnificum and nothing else.” “The skies are haunted by that which it were madness to know; and strange abominations pass evermore between earth and moon and athwart the galaxies. Unnamable things have come to us in alien horror and will come again.” “There are black zones of shadow close to our daily paths, and now and then some evil soul breaks a passage through.” She came from nothing. The dark nothing between the cold stars that burn in the night sky, that empty space that terrifies more than the aspect of a dizzying vastness of the never-ending, all consuming void. She came from a place that only knew hunger, a consuming need to devour, to claim and control, and she found it in the emptiness of a body nestled in a shell of ice. The egg was bereft of life, but the oblivious pair had no idea. They tended to their nest as any devoted parents would, unaware that one had never taken with the spark of life. The body grew, but no soul took root. The shell contained another shell, a vessel ready to be filled, a blank slate on which a design could be imprinted. She chose that slate, that vessel, and into it, she poured herself. It was small, weak, but blank, and all her own. She made it grow, shaped it to her liking, and when the time came, she broke free of her outer shell, and tilted her head to the skies. Those who gave birth to her vessel stared in mute horror as she opened all sets of her eyes and stared past them to the void between stars from whence she came.
