R I P T I D E
Riptide is a bit of a nomad, always has been, really. It’s the only thing her biological mother gave to her, a thought she’s had multiple times. She always pushes it away rather quickly, though- she’d never do what her mother did. She’d never abandon a hatchling just so she could travel the world She especially wouldn’t take one and abandon the other, either- can you imagine the effects that would leave on the hatchling left behind? Riptide can. Because she was that hatchling. Always wondering what was wrong with her, why her mother didn’t want her, where her mother and brother ended up- these thoughts, the ones that are harder to push away, are banished by Riptide’s adoptive mother, a dragon named Rose.
Rose was gentle and motherly and, above all, she loved Riptide with all of her heart, and Riptide loved her with all of hers. Ultimately, though, it was not enough to make Riptide stay. When she became an adult, Riptide felt that familiar pull that every guardian feels, the pull to find their charge and protect it, no matter what the cost. So, Riptide left. And travelled. And travelled. And travelled, until she reached the Sunbeam Ruins, and felt the urge to explore this part of Sornieth more deeply. So, she did, always feeling right behind what she was searching for, yet just a bit too early to find whatever it was she was searching for. Riptide hated that feeling, the feeling of not being enough, whether it’s too early or too late- was this what her mother felt? Still, Riptide wouldn’t excuse her actions. You should never abandon your days-old hatchling.
Eventually, Riptide finally caught up to what she had been searching for. One night, upon receiving the feeling that she should keep going, and ignore the exhaustion she felt, Riptide stumbled upon a clan- well, more of a travelling band of dragons, but the dragons in it proclaimed it to be a clan named Clan Yulon. They also proclaimed that she had to meet their leader before they could do anything before it- the leader was, apparently, a no-nonsense kind of dragon.
Upon being able to meet the leader, Riptide felt like she had just been caught in the Twisting Crescendo; she was shocked, and overjoyed, and content, and so many different emotions all at once. This was very strange, as Riptide had never been a particularly emotional dragon. It was upon this thought that Riptide realized she had found what she had been searching for- she had found what was, apparently, her charge. And once she paid more attention to who her charge was, Riptide was quite surprised. This no-nonsense leader, this dragon that had made Riptide feel so...much, was a pearlcatcher. A breed known for their pretentiousness and overall snobbiness. She realized that she would have to deal with it though, so Riptide quickly got over that fact.
Over time, Riptide became closer with Kelsus, her charge, and became a dear friend. She also became the guard captain due to her battle skill. Riptide, in addition to feeling the need to protect Kelsus, also feels many other emotions that, to this day, she can’t identify. Due to the nature of who her charge is, and the fact that Kelsus already has a perfectly good mate, Maia, Riptide has never dared to bring up these emotions to another dragon, and probably never will. Instead, Riptide contents herself with being Kelsus’ guardian and dear friend, and doesn’t think too long about what these emotions could mean.
