it's been a long, long time.
her teeth are sharp, and you are nothing but prey.
the autumn air is unforgivingly cold. you should have worn a cloak, but it's too late now.
she can smell you.
don't run. it's useless. she always catches up.
years ago, before your bones were brittle and worn, perhaps you could have saved yourself.
but now you are old. the weight and memory of times long passed press down on your shoulders.
the scent of earth fills your nose.
the world is silent but for the sound of leaves crunching beneath your tired feet.
and yet, you walk on.
ii. ashes to ashes
she hasn't come for you yet. you are still breathing.
something is wrong.
the path is obscured by weeds, but you know the way.
there it is.
the cathedral before you is older than you, older than your mother, older than her mother - and older still.
the ashes of the lost are buried here. their graves are faded and weather-beaten.
but they are unimportant. they are unforgiven. they are gone.
for now.
iii. dust to dust
the cathedral doors creak as you open them.
the sanctuary is just like you remember.
the stained glass windows, covered in dust, depict forgotten gods.
you can hear her now. her breathing disturbs the silence.
but that is unimportant. the altar is waiting.
you lay down. it is time.
she stands over you.
you close your eyes and breathe in the cold air, one last time.
and she sinks her teeth into your flesh.
it's been a long, long time.
