AUGDRA

The gift of séance is rarely observed in dragons not born under the Tidelord's gaze. But to defy the flow of space and time is considered a dangerous game. Even the Water dragons that revere the sunken god don't always welcome a child that seems to know all things to come, as the future is inevitable and the outcome of actions unpredictable, premonitions seem to be trailed by more tragedy than joy.

Augdra was one such child. Born as Tiberius, of Clan Mor-G'hora, in a sleepy village east to the city of Or'van, she was promised to serve in the Flamecaller's forge. Each family would offer their firstborn son to serve the Flamecaller, to strengthen the Flight and bring honor to the clan, as well as themselves. Answering the Call was non-negotiable, it was a glorious destiny. To defy it would be sacrilege, a denial of the clan's loyalty to the Flame and a stain upon the family. Augdra was told as much time and time again by her father growing up, who held memories of his eldest brother leaving their home once he was deemed old enough, who did their clan proud as he rose through the Forgery's ranks. Personally she didn't think much of uncle Remus, finding him a cranky, overtly talkative drunk whenever he'd come visit. Yet, when Father spoke of him she'd always detect a hint of both reverence and jealousy. And so Augdra knew that one day she too would join the Forgers and bring her clan glory. Because that's what Father said. And uncle Remus. Mother too. Grandfather and aunt Lauretta, and Meeri, and Master Kovalka. But sometimes, Augdra thought they might have it all wrong, because some nights when she'd drift off to sleep she'd learn things, see things, travel to places she'd never been to before, and it was her in those dreams, but her name wasn't Tiberius, and her claws didn't look like uncle Remus', chipped and blackened, paws calloused with years working the forge. Instead she'd come back knowing things not even Elder Nemora had heard of.

At first, Mother would laugh, and say her boy's imagination could fly higher than any spiral dragon, and Father payed no mind, other than occasionally chastising her for spending more time writing down her elaborate dreams than practicing how to control her fire. But as time went on, Mother would grow more and more silent as Augdra would speak of her visions. She'd ask the Elders for help, make potions to help her sleep, and began telling her to be quiet when she would start sharing her newest adventure with family friends. Father's attitude largely remained the same, even after the first nightmare, when Augdra saw farmer Rikkon's youngling fall into a well. But that too changed only two weeks later, when the three-day search for young Min came to a tragic end when Rikkon found his son drowned in Old Enna's garden well, his wings still far too weak to fly out. Father rarely spoke to her after that. Father barely said anything.

So Augdra learned to keep her dreams close to heart, while desperately fighting to deny the truth, that her dreams weren't dreams at all, and for a time it worked. She continued to grow, learn and practice, with the hope that one day she'd do her clan proud, yet as the years went by it became more and more apparent to her that she didn't belong. She was physically weaker that most of the other forge-promised youth under Master Kovalka's tutelage, yet she knew how to spin magic like no one else in her village. She'd argue with the elders, pointing out fallacies in their historical teachings, and was argumentative with her peers over how the world functioned. The social hierarchies that dominated Clan life felt stifling and outdated to her, and she often found herself frustrated with the amount of misinformation and prejudice expressed by her family members. She discovered that she didn't need to use her body to conjure fire, her mind was enough to bring flames to life. The element bended to her will easily, with such grace that even the occasional wandering Thaumaturge did not possess. She wasn't like the boys in her class either. And first she thought it might be because she didn't think she was a boy at all, and that brought her some peace for a while. But after some more pondering she didn't think she was like the girls in her village either. She was nothing like Mother, nor her sisters, or aunts. The things they worried about seemed so insignificant, the things they spoke off trivial, and their curiosity ended where the village walls began. She had seen the broken pillar. The dark sky somehow made darker as the Fade dripped over stars like ink on parchment. How could she expect anyone to understand, when she could see the cogs of destiny and fate twist and turn as the Fool of time played games with the flickering lives of mortals.

Once that realization hit her there was no going back. No matter how hard she wished she was who her family wanted her to be she couldn't lie or pretend any longer. Destiny had betrayed her. She'd seen the future, her future, even as foggy and vague as it may have been in her dreams, and she knew the stars had done her wrong. She wasn't going to stay in the village of her ancestors. She wasn't going to bring honor to her family. She'd never become a Forger. She'd even deny her father his only son. Because Tiberius never existed. Augdra was Augdra, all along. Augdra who councils Kings. Augdra who learned the secrets of Gods. Augdra who is using magic long forgotten, Augdra who was respected, and feared, and hated, and revered and Augdra who lies and sees and knows. Augdra who is alone. Augdra who will be alone. Augdra who knows yet doesn't know what her future brings anymore. Augdra who was denied her promised destiny. Augdra who decides to defy the one she was given.

Augdra, who is left with a choice to make.

Story to-do to add later:

Augdra in her prime, now a much older dragon, through one of her disciples' eyes, after she was involved in the Scorched Wastes incident, talking a bit about the few things the students know about her life, gossiping about her past, while being eager to be a part of the new school of thought on the matters of non-water based seances
