THE EIGHTEENTH CARVING
Layem: determined guardian
This statue is hunched down, as if stalking prey, its wings outstretched in intimidation.
The statue’s eyes are intense, its brow furrowed and muzzle scrunched in a nasty snarl. Its tongue is pressed between its teeth, and its shoulders are hunched above its head. It is low to the ground, legs bent, and tail low. It is staring out into the distance, but at what?
There is a cub, carved of sandstone, right beneath its belly. It is easy to miss. its eyes, too, are wide, and it bears a sizable crack across its front leg.
There is palpable anger from this guardian, but you get the sense it is not aimed at you. . .
