Just like how her hearing was the last sense that had gone out, it was also her first sense to return.

The soft, gentle rustling of a warm breeze on grass, was the first thing she heard again. Light started to pool into her vision when she slowly opened her ice-colored eyes and she started to be able to feel every single grass blade that brushed against her murk green scales. The grass itself was a more vibrant, a lighter green than she was used to, with the area around her seeming to be open.

Lifting her head, she felt a part of her neck was sore and out of the corner of her eye, she was able to see scars in place of the pained areas. As she sluggishly looked at herself, she noticed that her scales seemed to have changed a bit. While she still had the markings of a python, there was now a pattern similar to poisonous frogs on her brown wings with a blue accent. A similar blue colored the scales of her underbelly.

For a few minutes, Rikki was silent and thoughtless as she looked around, confused. Every single event, she remembered oh so clearly, and yet. . . here she was, out in the middle of a green, windswept field.
Looking around at the environment, she could see rolling hills that seemed to stretch to infinite. Distant cliff sides and plateaus were seen on the horizon where the hills ran towards, with forests of trees and bamboos scattered about.

It was so. . . open. It made her feel vulnerable. Ever since she was a hatchling, she had lived within a rainforest, so the sudden change of scenery was startling.

Wait. . . was her first thought. Where- where am I?

There were no lush rainforests nearby as far as she could tell. Even the climate felt different, having drastically less humidity in the air. The sky was a light blue, clear of any clouds, allowing her to look straight up at where the blue became darker.

“Hey, are you alright?”

Rikki let out a hiss as she heard a voice behind her. Jumping to her talons, she turned around quickly and laid eyes on just who had snuck up on her. In her instincts, she was prepared for a battle, her confusion on her face replaced with anger.

There was a green mirror with red accents in both their wings and clothing standing next to a blue pearlcatcher with purple apparel. Both seemed a bit startled at her reaction, staying at their spots and keeping their distance from her. Their faces expressed concern and Rikki was able to identify that it had been the blue pearlcatcher who had spoken.

“I’m fine,” Rikki spoke sternly, trying to convince both them and herself that she wasn’t weak- she didn’t need any help. Everything was going to be alright. She would find her way back home, to her moms. . .

“Are you sure?” The mirror questioned, she looked over at them and tilted her head, noticing that he had a prosthetic for his left arm. “Since- well, we kind of saw you appear out of thin air in the middle of some runes on the groun- ow!”

The mirror was interrupted as the pearlcatcher used her elbow to prod at his chest. “You are bad at interrogation. Surely I’ve taught you to leave out that we know everything.”

“Oh come on Ives!” The mirror let out a small laugh. “We haven’t been able to find a mission for months, plus there’s no harm in mentioning it here.”

Extinction, you are something else. . .” The pearlcatcher, Ives, sighed with disappointment, shaking their head as they turned back to Rikki. “But yeah, admittedly, we are curious about that.”

Runes on the ground? Rikki was puzzled. If the two dragons were telling the truth, then the runes must’ve been around when she was still. . . dead? Unconscious? It took a moment before she finally muttered an answer, a small crack forming in her strong demeanor. “I. . . don’t know.”

“You. . . don’t know what those were about?” Ives tilted her head, the pearlcatcher equally confused as her.

“Are you sure you weren’t performing some spell?” Extinction suggested. “Maybe teleportation, or maybe you opened a portal! Enchanted object? Cursed ruins?”

Part of Rikki wished one of Extinction’s guesses was what had actually happened to her.

It felt like there was a lump in her throat as she struggled to reply. “No. . . I-I died.”

The weight of what had happened her finally reached her now that she said it out loud. Ives and Extinction exchanged expressions of pure shock and maybe slight horror.

“Died. . . I-I died,” Rikki started to break apart, staring down at her talons as tears started to fill her eyes. Her breaths became scattered and disorganized. “W-why? How am I still alive? H-how- I shouldn’t- Hellebore-”

She was interrupted as she felt someone grasp her talons. For a brief moment, a faint memory wisped up from the back of her mind. She was in Canela’s arms, and a warm, comforting song filled the air, sung by Tyrian. There was a makeshift fireplace that filled the captain’s quarters of a ship with warmth. Just as quickly as it had appeared, the memory faded and she found herself back in reality.

Extinction was holding onto one of her talons tightly, worry filling his eyes. Comfort slowly washed over her as she started to realize that she wasn’t completely alone.

“You know,” Ives spoke as she stared out at the horizon, “I. . . wouldn’t be surprised if Windsinger revived you or something.”

“That would make a bit of sense,” Extinction replied as he slowly let go of Rikki once he knew she was calmed down. “I did think the energy the runes gave off were more powerful than normal.”

“But. . . why?” Rikki couldn’t help but question, trying to hold back her sobs as she wiped the tears from her eyes.

“Sometimes the deities are more benevolent than they’re depicted as,” Ives turned her head to look at her. “Maybe he decided you deserved a second chance.”

Rikki was speechless once more, trying to process the information in her head.

“Did. . . you have family where you were?” Extinction seemed a bit hesitant to ask, although was relieved when the fae nodded. “Do you remember where?”

Dread filled her again at that question. R-right. . . I meant to look at the maps before we were set to depart on the airship. . .

“No,” Rikki sighed in defeat, looking down at the grass below her.

“Well, we can try to help you find them again if you wish to join us,” Ives suggested.

“I-” Rikki hesitated as she thought over the offer for a moment. Eventually, a smile formed on her face, piercing through her sadness. “I wouldn’t mind that.”
