Gwendolyn
Garden Keeper

Garden of Blight

A clan within a clan, Gwendolyn thought, as she left her parlay with Nyx. How was such a thing to work?

Her clan loved their home, loved the Scarred Wasteland despite all of its many, many hardships, but they were a clan of Veilspuns. With a proper swarm like she had seen Fae or even some of her brethren make, they could carve out a life in the harsh environment. But her clan was small, and poor at defending themselves, and they were in dire need of assistance. It was by luck alone that they found the Garden of Blight. Its name was misleading, from what Gwendolyn could see.
There, in the heart of this winding labyrinth of a nest was a lush paradise in the heart of the most pestilent corner of the Plaguebringer’s domain. The name was clearly a ruse to keep rival clans out. But Gwendolyn and her dwindling followers were not rivals; they were stowaways. They hid away in this newfound haven for weeks before they were caught by the Guardian that pruned and checked every last leaf in the garden to ensure it stayed perfect. In that time, they stole whatever food they could manage, and enjoyed a peace they had not ever had before. This land had taken much from Gwendolyn, but finally, finally, it was giving something back.

Gwen had not seen her mate, Basilodes, so at ease since the first lovely moons of their courtship. Their first clutch was at the very start of their clan, when they were tired and hungry and even fewer in number to hunt, and the food supply took a hit when they settled down to nest. One egg was all Gwen was able to nurture, then. Ernest stayed with them and grew the clan with his newfound mate. Their numbers grew, they added more tiny, determined Veilspuns to their ranks, and Gwen and Bas finally felt secure enough to try for another clutch. Their clan was situated in shallow caves hollowed in the hills of the Abiding Boneyard. The wandering Contagion could and did reach them easily there. Many were lost that day, including their entire clutch.

With the lair destroyed, Gwen had no choice but to lead her clan elsewhere to safety. They had needed shelter and food, and would find none of it in their old home. The garden provided for them. The pairs in her clan was teeming with new life. For the first time, they were well fed and safe, and their clan grew every day. So, when Stillife, guardian of the gardens brought her before the clan leaders, she had no shame, and she told Nyx, the clan matriarch as much. She was keeping this new home for herself and her clan. Before Nyx and Acheron, the progenitors, and all the courtiers and nobles, Gwendolyn pled her case. The meeting was long and arduous. Resources were scarce, and even with an internal ecosystem like the garden to support them, the clan still struggled to feed itself.

7704.png Gwendolyn was able to prove the usefulness of her clan. Her clan was small, and would be under Nyx's jurisdiction, but would become its own sect. They would tend to the garden that supported them, and their other gifts would go to help the entire clan, not just the Veilspuns. They settled into their new lives nicely. Gwen and her cohorts had a much easier time taming the beasts in the garden because they were not quite so large. Three sisters of different clutches all were gifted foresight, and together they become a safeguard against future dangers by weaving and predicting the fate of the clan.
