A Replicate. An attempt at making Allison, at playing god with lives. This is Conviction. They are convinced they will succeed. They will fail, time and time again. This is what she has determined.
A prison. For the failed ones, they say. She is one of the failed ones, so she resides there. This is Conviction. An endless sentence of misery, until she is inevitably killed.
She believes she has a plan. To escape, to leave. This is Conviction. She is convinced she will succeed. She will, for the story would not go on if she did not. It will not be the way she thinks.
They allow her to leave, once they learn of her memory. She remembers everything. All of it. Like a robot. They replace her body with mechanical parts, leaving only what they need from it. This is Conviction. She is punished for no crime at all.
She is no longer made of flesh, save for her mind, but still she holds hope. This is Conviction. The hope that something will change, no matter the odds.
One day, her Conviction comes true. Theirs does not. She escapes, following the girl with the bright eyes and green hair, who proclaims herself her “sibling in spirit, great-aunt in blood”, and she thinks that is just astounding. This is hope. This is something new. This…is what she needs.
She is brought back to a dome; the Warren, they call it, a joking reference to something she doesn’t know. She meets people; there’s so many of them. A girl with her hair braided back into a dark rope, more of her relatives that she didn’t even know about, and so many others, people from all over the multiverse.
It’s overwhelming. But she keeps her Conviction. She will keep going.
She meets a girl. “The name’s Spitfire,” the girl states, holding out her hand to shake. She takes it, politely, as gently as she can. Spitfire laughs. “No need for the gentleness, I’m not gonna snap. You got a name?”
She doesn’t.
“You can just make one up on the spot if you need to.”
That’s an option. She ponders for a moment before answering, with what feels right, with what feels like her. “Conviction,” she says. “My name is Conviction.”
