An acolyte of alchemy, a nimble assassin, and the Queen of Nightshades. However, Umbra wasn't always the royalty she is today. She worked day and night to get her clan together just so she could escape the grasp of the academy she grew up in.

Her parents were wealthy arcane scholars of the Esoteric Dynasty. The Esoterics lived in their pristine towers, fabled to be fully enchanted with all kinds of arcane energy. While they were rich and powerful scholars, they also had their extremely strict rules. If one of their servants or underlings disobeyed, they would be slashed with magic. Umbra was not excluded from this rule, despite being their only child and heir. Since Umbra had no siblings, they were extra harsh on her to follow in their footsteps and continue the Esoteric legacy. So she was forced into a scholarly academy even though she had other interests in mind rather than studying the ley lines of magic.

Umbra was curious about alchemy and the kind of magic hidden within herbs. One could brew a herb just right to heal or to hurt. She thought this was fascinating; Turning seemingly useless flora into mysterious substances. She wanted to study and explore this alchemical phenomenon. Of course, her parents would never allow their girl to roam around and collect pretty flowers for her so-called "alchemy." So she kept her hidden interest to herself, hoping that one day, alchemy would be more than just an interesting concept to her.

However, not everything was bad with the Magister's Academy. While most of her hours were spent studying things that have been studied for centuries, the students were freed from their agonizing book lairs twice a day for two hours at a time. These break times were Umbra's favorite as she finally got to get up from her desk. Most of the academy students wandered off to the library or simply hung out in the study room. However, Umbra would take a flight down to the Crystalspine Reaches and experiment with her curiosities.

During one of her explorations of the lower reaches, she found a sheltered cave within one of the peaks. It was cold, hollow, and out of sight. Her mirror eyes told her nothing had lived within the cavern for ages; Perfect for Umbra's intentions. Only she had no way to see in the dark. So she made note of the cave and scrawled a hidden trail of claw marks leading to the cavern before returning to the academy. She then spent the rest of her time lurking around the campus, searching for a feasible light source.

About 20 minutes before the break bell rang, she spotted three candles on the side of the librarian's desk. She couldn't just grab the candle out in the open, not with so many students looming around. She figured she might as well linger around and see what books they had to offer and to her luck, she saw a small section of books about herbology and healing magics. Almost immediately, she rushed over, and picked up a book titled, "The Herbs of Sornieth." This was the exact kind of book her parents would forbid her from reading.

So she devised a plan to get both the books and the candle for her cave expedition. She waited until the bell rang before pulling down the hood of her cloak and approaching the librarian with her books in hand. "Of course, there's always the one who can't make up their mind until after the bell.." The older fae mumbled as she stretched from her roost, and floated over to her desk, "How may I help you?" Umbra made sure her hood and cloak kept her as hidden as possible, "Madam, I would like to check out these books of herbology." The three books clattered onto the desk as the fae overlooked the hooded figure in front of her, "Well since they have instructions for making poisons, I would have to verify you're a medical student." This made Umbra panic as she was forced into ley line studies by her parents and there was no way she would know a med student's name to lie. Plus if the academy told her parents she was trying to check out books for alchemy. Well, she'd be better off dead.

Meanwhile, the fae fluttered into the facility room behind her, muttering something about a student catalog, leaving her back turned to Umbra. In a mist of thinking of ways to get out of this, her mirror instincts woke up and left her with a particularly devious plan. This little fae wouldn't be able to defend herself if Umbra chose to attack her, especially with her back turned. Umbra didn't want to hurt the fae but she was already scheming to snatch a candle along with the books. So she was already on the moral landslide, what more is ambushing the librarian in the grand scheme of things?

Umbra had made up her mind quickly and proceeded to slowly slink up and over the desk, before she had a clear shot of pouncing on the older fae, who was now opening a large book she presumed was the catalog. Umbra veered her legs and let her mirror instincts take over. Those smaller, beedy eyes swiftly detected the vulnerabilities of the little fae and strook her with all the body weight and furiosity of a young mirror. Immediately, her claws pinned down her prey and her maw silenced a bold scream from the little creature. Umbra could feel the struggle beneath her as she felt the pulse of her victim's neck in her jaws. However, the vain struggle slowed and came to a stop only moments later. Umbra felt the last attempted breaths as the pulse ceased to exist. Quickly as she attacked, Umbra let go of the fae's lifeless body as she could barely comprehend what she had just done. The adrenaline didn't stop there as Umbra began to panic. How could she just kill someone like that? Especially an innocent librarian. She glanced over to the catalog and sure enough, it was a list of medical students, which gave her an idea. Umbra looked around for a writing utensil, found a quill, and hastily circled a random name on the list. The name was Bane Evergrew. She had never known a Bane before, so pinning the murder on him seemed like a good idea at the time. Now that she had a suspect to blame, Umbra picked up the light blue fae and positioned her body in a way that made it seem she circled the name within her last dying breath. Umbra then cleaned the blood off her and deemed the small amount on her dark cloak as insignificant for now. She would have to wash it out in the sea during her next break. She then glanced up at the clock on the wall and noted she was 7 minutes late from when the passing period ended. She would definitely get criticized for being late, but honestly, that was the least of her worries. Umbra collected her books and her prized candle into her cloak before sprinting down the hall with the swiftness of a mirror.

After what just happened, study time seemed to go agonizingly slow.

So she delved in with the candle she stole from the
