Nafairath looked pretty much like her sisters… until she opened her eyes. A brilliant light shot forth, dazzling in its intensity. “AAah, too bright!” cried Natasha. “Shut your FACE!” screamed Nadya…And so she screwed her eyes closed again. “No way you’re going to be a Night Warrior like that!” they taunted her. “WE’re going out to train, and don’t you try tagging along, you’ll ruin everything!!” So she stayed in the nest, huddling miserably around her fear that they were right!
“Oh, there you are!” her mother exclaimed. The child had all but disappeared in her stillness. “Come join us for supper!” Nafairath sighed loudly and reluctantly unfolded herself. She took Tempora’s hand and let herself be led to the dining hall. But she refused to open her eyes again, eating by smell and touch. This annoyed her mother a bit. “What are you being stubborn about? I don’t have time to coddle you!” She left, thinking it would encourage her youngest to come to her senses. And in a way, it did, but not as assumed.
Quite contrary to expectation, she stayed where she was, eyes shut the whole time. She listened to the voices murmuring around her, coming and going, and eventually fell asleep. At one point the hall fell silent and she woke, finding that someone had thought to cover her to keep warm where she dozed. She groped her way to a quiet corner, out of the way, and made herself more comfortable. Later, when sound returned, she began to hallucinate - or so she thought at first. Really it was her mind creating images by means of her other senses. Finally, much later that day, she tentatively emerged from hiding, eyes closed, braving her surroundings by attending to those images behind her eyelids, and finding them true. So! She need not fear giving her position away by opening her eyes! Unless….. maybe she wanted to? She was confused at the direction her thoughts were taking, and sought out advice. Could she still be a Night Warrior?
“Of course you can! Your sisters were just being mean, because they didn’t understand! You are blessed by the Lighweaver, but you are also a child of Pulchrior, so you need only to study and train to earn your place, regardless of their opinions! But, perhaps you might be happier training with another clan… In fact, we’ve had word that recruiters will be coming here looking for new candidates in just a few days! So why don’t you think about where you might like to travel, and talk to them then?”
Nafairath thought that was an interesting idea. She retreated to a secluded spot to test herself and find out how her eyes were different and see what she could offer another clan, in hopes they would choose her. The time passed quickly, and before she knew it, they were here, and introductions began!
“These two have come from WindSky Weyr …”
