She is a slice of the sunset itself. Ethereal beauty, captured in mortal form. Her strawberry scales are smooth, lustrous, nothing alike his, scarred and rough from years spent at sea. His dark claws thread through her delicate fingers. She is so, so warm, a lone flame that kindles the inferno within him, his heart thundering like a drum as he glides with her in a mesmerizing dance, movements fluid as water. Her eyes are electric, striking him like lightning as she stares up at him with a kindness he wasn't certain he was worthy of. She is the colour of autumn, a touch of dusk and dawn; she is his saviour, a light he selfishly yearns to keep, a light he would die to protect. For worthy or not, their fates had been forever entwined. He was hers.

He twirls her around and has her breathless, capturing her in his arms with the efficiency of a serpent coiling prey. That familiar fanged grin splits his face from ear to ear, wolfish and sinister, but behind his eyes of fire is a shattered soul. His fury is as unpredictable and powerful as the ocean; his passion is volcanic, roaring like the flames of an untamed fire. His hands are scarred, yet his touch is tender. She is not intimidated by the flash of his sharp fangs or the spikes that crown his head, sharper than knives. He rasps words that make her smile, his voice like gravel upon silk, sending shivers down her spine and pooling warmth in her belly. She leans forward, her snout softly bumping his and she watches his eyes soften and glow, turning his fierce, icy heart to liquid gold.

Shallows knew ghosts. He had been haunted by them for countless years, recalling many sleepless nights, too many. He understood her anguish; the reluctance to dare let herself be lulled into the false security of sleep, when waiting in the darkness were ghosts. Her soft breathing hitched and he opened a serpentine eye, gazing at her. She shuffled against him. She was a protector, a fierce flame, yet as delicate in his arms as a flower, scales soft as petals, too. He brought her closer, letting her slide her head upon his chest to listen to the steady drum of his heartbeat. All tension eased from her features, her dainty golden claws curling against the jagged scars that marred his chest. Once more, his eyes fell shut. For as long as she needed him... he would be there, guarding her until the break of dawn.

When she awakens, the relief hits him like a tsunami. It flows through the captain, through the entire ship. She turns her head, her eye opening a fraction and the moment she sees him, there is so much warmth in her gaze. She gives a sound so sweet it ensnares him in an instant, the ice that encases his heavy heart melting. His name leaves her in a gentle, weak coo, followed by a quivering smile that holds so much strength. He wishes he could tell her how much he truly worships her, his sweet, autumn ruby, his ray of sunshine, but the words stay locked on his tongue. He only moves an inch then stills, watching as her light fades from consciousness yet again, breathing slow and peaceful. Stay close.
