"hmm. perhaps he fell ill and turned to herbal/natural medicine to help cue him? that might have been his motive for getting into gardening, too. while he was ill someone had to take care of his duties, and when he was well enough to serve again they didnt want him back? so he retired as a knight, and maybe is a herbalist/healer now?"
"Maybe he found his cat that TideMonster suggested in the castle (if that’s where he lives/protects?) gardens as a stray and “adopted” it to keep him company in retirement?
Something completely different: perhaps the light symbol on his forehead is a sign of the knights strength- the brighter the glow the stronger the knight. It’s given to them at the time when they’re officially knighted. His was the brightest out of the class, and he eventually grew stronger and stronger which allowed him to live up in ranks.
Maybe he met a forbidden love, or trusted the enemy, and his symbols started to grow dim. They started to flicker constantly- a sign that his strength as a knight was fading. He decided to retire before anyone found out what was going on behind the scenes?" -fruitbatt
