the port city she guards is a strange one. it is always night; the light of day has no hold. orange lanterns and red talismans are strung up from shop to shop, the fiery light washing dimly over the patrons, who seem as if no more than fading shadows. besides the low hum of the crowds, there is the faint, ever-present sound of water, lapping against the docks. mortal senses are dulled, like a muffled, invisible blanket has settled over the city. shapes blur into each other, and noises that would be harsh are no more than quiet whispers. it is long past midnight, the city in a stasis of early morning. the outskirts are heavily misted, the fog curling over the water to seep away in presence of the farthest-reaching lights. outsiders are unwelcome. any who get in always stumble out after some time, mumbling wild tales of what they have encountered, desperately longing to get back into the city again until their lives waste away as shells of who they were before. only the chosen are able to stay, and there they vanish forever, never seen again.
