Underdeveloped, but the idea I have running is that they did something kind of really abhorrent and died somehow as a result; probably because of wounds sustained during completing the "mission" they did.
Now they're kind of trapped in between worlds in this brainless loop of dread and guilt. They were probably a dragon / person before they died depending on the setting, but now they're in a canine form. Pre-death, massively honor driven to a disturbing point which is why they did what led to their death, but they could definitely talk and say full sentences before.
They have deteriorated mentally to an extreme point so they are basically at the intelligence level of a canine. No critical thinking skills, object permanence, etc etc.
